To workers who deal with serving coffee: (MINOR RANT)

To be fair, if you as a business deal with coffees to go, it is not too much to expect that said coffees to go would have LIDS. I don't think these people are idiots, I think their expectations are perfectly reasonable.

I am thinking the same thing. Places that usually serve coffee, is also having lids. So they are probably putting 1+1 together.

What I truly hate is this exchange, which takes place at least twice a day.

SC: I want a regular coffee
Me: A 'regular' for us is one sugar/one cream, is that what you want?
SC: *starting to get pissed already* Yes
Me: What size?
SC: *almost shouting* REGULAR!


Holy shit on a sombrero! And we aren't even a freaking Starbucks! Small, medium, large or extra large. Why is that so hard???

The boy and I go to Starbucks a couple times a month. I always tell them the size and what I want. I typically only get lattes or frappuccinos and I don't ask for any extras or modifications, or whatever so my order is easy and straightforward.

Apparently they like us or at least pretend to because they always comment when it's been a little while since we stopped in.

and there's a starbucks on campus where the staff is really nice & they make good hot chocolates.

they do get some SCs i've seen though, your card-declined people etc.

I get that too. They don't tell me the size, they say coffee regular. That could mean milk and sugar in any size. TELL ME THE SIZE PEOPLE. Regular isn't a size at my job. It's small, medium, large and extra large. Geez.

Not just coffee. In reality ANY item with more than one option. Take ordering a cake..

Me: What flavor. Chocolate, yellow or marble.
SC: Cake.

Repeat as necessary.

This morning the people at my local Starbucks did "just know" what I wanted automatically. Probably has to do with the fact that college has turned me into a caffeine addict who needs his coffee to stay awake in Japanese lecture.

well it's not starbucks but there's a place my parents often go to for breakfast on saturdays where one of the women who works there is very friendly & awesome. She always remembers how they like their coffee (first cup regular, after that they switch to decaf) if someone else takes the order she'll tell them.

Me: I want a medium Number 2 with a side salad with ranch and Diet Dr. Pepper
Counter Guy: Okay, a Number 2. What side would you like?

Me: ranch.
Counter Guy: What would you like to drink.

I always have to ask them what size, then if they want their coffee black. They say no and just stand there.

Oh God. I'm not that bad. I listen to each customer carefully. The counter guy made it more complicated then it's supposed to be. Kudos to you for ordering the correct way.

Ugh. That's happened to me so often that at this point the conversation usually goes like this:

Customer: I want a coffee
Me: (hmm...no "may I please have? I think not") Okay. *blank stare* ....................(Okay, I see that I'm going to have to be the pro-active one in this relationship) What size?

And the drive-thru expansion pack!:
Me: *Hands out drink* Thanks, have a nice day.
Customer: Is there any cream or sugar in here?
Me: No. (You didn't ask for it. All you wanted was coffee. Remember?)
Customer: Oh, well...I want some.
Me: K. *put in 3 oz of cream and 1 sugar*

If you don't specify, that is what you recieve. And lo, the customer doth learn for the next time (hopefully. Because, if you couldn't tell, I get a sadistic glee out of that little game).

I don't work with coffee but I do get the generic order all the time! Usually it's a flavor of smoothie ("I want strawberry/banana!") Um..we have 8 different strawberry/banana smoothies not counting the ones that have strawberries and bananas in them but don't predominately taste like it. Oy! But then there are the special ones that like to walk up to me and say "I want a smoothie!" (it's never a question either!) These people always get the blank stare followed by "oooookkk...." and the menu point.

What is so hard about looking at a menu?! It's huge and right in front of you! You see it before you see me! WHY?!?!?!

for the coffee side of this...I get both sides. While a customer should definitely say what size and specific coffee drink (mocha vs latte etc) but I wouldn't ever think to order sugar and cream at the counter...maybe that's me just not ordering alot of coffee? Most places I've gone to have the bar I can customize my drink myself! (mmm...nutmeg....)

I was at the 'bucks the other day, and the person in front of me walked up to the counter and snapped "coffee!" at the girl at the register. To her credit, she politely waited a moment and asked what size. To which she received: "regular!" She waited another moment and asked if the gentleman would like his coffee black, or with room for cream. "I said regular!" She pointed out the area two feet away that has the cream and sugar, and left room for cream. He walked away, muttering, "Can't even get a regular coffee in this place. Costs five bucks and they can't even fill it up all the way." Um, his total was $1.97 (same at his undoubtedly precious Dunkin'), and he proceeded to POUR OUT an ounce or so to make MORE room for cream. Grr.

The first few times I got my now-favorite drink, I wasn't quite sure how to order it, so I just listened to how the cashier told the barista what I wanted. And now I order it that way, but I've never gotten in trouble for putting the "nonfat" or "grande" out of order.
