  • "Videodrome is offensive"

We have 3 copies of David Croneneberg's Videodrome at the library. A woman comes up and wants a coplaint form, because the movie shouldn't be in the general collection and should be x-rated.

So she fills out a complaint form.

Now I want to see it!

Years ago a City councilmember was offended by the Jenna Jameson book (How to Make Love Like a Porn Star: A Cautionary Tale) and we had to keep the copies in storage.

And now we have no copies of the book in the system.

Anyway, it's sucky that customers want us to ban books, when no doubt, they will be ticked if we ban an art book because it has nudity.

Hey, any other stories about "inappropriate" material? (so this won't lead to fratching)

Our local library has a shelf of "banned books" so you can go straight to them, they even have a banned book week where they have all of them on a central table with labels explaining who/ where and why they are banned.

I was shocked by some of them, they were classics that I had been MADE to read at my school! Catcher in the rye even...

Of course Videodrome is offensive! It's a David Cronenberg film after all. That's what he does.

When I worked at Blockbuster there was a critically-acclaimed movie called "The Deep End" that had recently come out on DVD. The movie starred Tilda Swinton and was about a woman who goes to great lengths to protect her son after she thinks he killed his gay lover. I thought the movie was excellent, and one day I recommended it to a customer.

Me: Oh, that movie is really great!
      Customer:Yeah, it's really great if you're gay!

I was shocked. Nowhere on the DVD case did it mention that aspect of the story. Come to find out, one of my co-workers was warning people off it by telling them, "You know this movie has gay sex in it."

I don't even think she ever saw the movie because there is not actually any gay sex in it.

And Grapes of Wrath, one of the few READABLE books from school.

Have you read And Tango Makes Two? That one is DAMN cute! It has fuzzy penguins and a fuzzy leetle grey penguin chicadoodle popping out of the egg like "o hai!"

It's about gay penguins who adopt an egg. True story.

This discussion on banned books makes me glad I went to a private school for my middle and highschool years, where we read books like '1984', 'The Outsiders', and 'The Chocolate War', books that probably been banned in most public schools.

It also reminded me of a trip to San Francisco we took while studying the Beat Generation. At an exhibit about about said generation at the DeYoung Museum, they showed an old photograph of books that were banned in the '50s, some titles which surprised me. The only title from the photo I can remember now, though, is James Joyce's 'Ulysseus'

            Offensive video

We had this awesome video, about 12 minutes that looped over and over again from a broadhead manufacturer.

The video showed several big ol' Tom Turkeys wandering about then the broadhead slicing their heads off. It was honestly quite hilarious to watch. But then it got funnier watching the women who got 'offended' when they watched it. We had several complain to us we shouldn't show that video.

Sold a crapton of broadheads tho...

What is it with people always wanting to ban the best movies? Why not ban movies based on how mediocre they are? That's something I can actually get behind.

                  Don't waste your time.

Without giving away spoilers, I will say only that it is a gross out fest of a techno-horror film with a silly, SLOW MOVING plot and a "surprise ending" that is just an excuse to show off special make-up effects in an attempt to gross out the audience even more. The story is extremely dated by today's storylines' standards, and if you have read much science fiction, the story's "twist" is obvious about half-way into the flick.

Like such craptacular sequels like Terminator 3 or SW Episode 1? Or originals like Titanic? (Boat hits big fucking ice cube and sinks - we already know the ending)

(and before the flames, I've been a fan of both Terminator and SW since day one)

Now, I can't wrap my mind around "banned books/movies", because we didn't have that when I went to high school, and I lived in a conservative town! We had 4 different Christian churches in the town, and the school I went to was allowed to teach evolution. We read books like Catcher in the Rye, the Outsiders, and Fahrenheit 451 (which illustrates how far things could go if book burnings/bannings continue), along with other "banned books". We even watched the Outsiders movie in my 10th grade English class!

We were even taught about McCarthyism, and how rampant it was during the 50s, and how terrible it was to authors and literature.

I don't see a point in banning stuff. Knowledge is power, and, with few exceptions, the smarter a person is, the less likely they are to be an asshole customer.

There are very few banned books in Australia that I'm aware of...we can read the classics if we like. Although I remember reading up a while ago that the Judy Blume books (I love those books!) were among the most popular banned ones!

I'm surprised the Mission Impossible sequels weren't on the list Seriously, towards the end of the second one, did they run out of things to shoot? That damn chase/fight scene bored the hell out of me. Kill him already!
