  • scammers or just stupid

So a least once a day I have people that come in and want to cash in change. Its
not usually much a few dollars worth. But really gets me is that people will be a quater short of a dollar and they ALWAYS try to pass a nickle off as a quater. For example:I had a guy come in and he had two dollars worth of change. He starts counting it and gets to .75 cents and then throws a nickle at me and says there ,a1.00. I said sir this is a nickle not a quater. You owe me .20 more cents. He got red and mad.He starting yelling, show me I don't believe you.I counted it out to him. He screamed fine and said I guess I ONLY have a dollars worth then.I replied with yes sir you only have a dollar.I gave him his dollar and he left (thank jebus)
In the past I would have let it slide but there is a new company taking over our store in July. And from what my soon to be ex boss has said they are very strict about the money stuff. So I'm just getting used to being more careful. If I remember right my boss said they would even allow us to validate(Hurray) or give change(thank jebus). But my point is are these people low level scam artists or just too stupid to count change?

The flinging of the nickle makes me thing small time scammer. Maybe it worked some other time and they're hoping it'll happen again, or maybe the phantom, "Other cashier" let it happen.

I'd smile at him silently until he said something then tell him I'm waiting for the other 20 cents.

I agree about the scam angle. But did you say the new bosses will allow you to make change? From your post, it sounded like you're already doing so. Frankly, I like the fact that we aren't allowed to make change. Sure people will piss and moan, but I'm not a bank and it removes all chances of the 'ol quick change artist. And I'm not a bank. I love how policy backs that one up.

That just does not scream Scammer to me. He could of had a brain burp and then with you telling him that he was 20cents short. he could have figured that he was being joked with. And then when you counted it out, it pretty much told him that you were calling him a lier. But then again, I was not there and this is just an observation from the post.

That's a false dichotomy. They're both scammers and stupid.

I refuse to exchange change for cash on the grounds that most of the people who come in to do said exchange are the panhandlers that have been sitting out there all day cashing in on people's generosity.
