Had my first, “How do I get on the internet?” at the desk…without the computer.

A guest stopped by and often questions at the desk take seconds. This gentleman…was a bit of a slow speaker….

    Me: Hello!
SC: Hi … … I can’t get on the internet.
Me: Okay, are you trying to get on the wireless or…??
    SC: … yeah… wireless …
Me: Okay, well when you connect to see what wireless networks are available, what pops up?
SC: um…I don’t know… … one is like called hhonors or something.
Me: Okay… anything like guest_hotel or anything show up at all? I have been hearing that one has been stronger lately.
    SC: … … I don’t know. … …
Me: Well, can you go up there & give me a call? I am not tech support but I can give it a try. Most people are able to get on without no issue.
SC: What’s your number? (Now, it was a strange question but I dunno, clearly the guy doesn’t fire on all terminals.)
Me: 0, you reach the desk by calling 0
SC: Oh *huh huh huh*… okay

……. Disappears and I have tons of guests come to check in so when he calls I told him I would call him back ASAP.

    SC: uh… … … hello?
Me: Hi, this is the front desk. Sorry about that, it’s been busy. Okay what wireless networks did you find available?
SC: um….uh….um… … … I still only see the hhonors one.
Me: Hmm, and it won’t let it connect huh?
SC: No….what do I do aren’t you tech support??
Me: No, I am just a front desk person (but apparently I need a degree in friggn everything with you damn guests!), but perhaps if you bring it down I can take a look at it.
SC: ….Okay so you promise…. you can get me connected?
Me: (omg really?) No, I can’t promise anything because it’s not my own computer, but I can sure try!
SC: Okay so promise me when I come down there that you will get it working.
Me: (What the hell? I can’t!) Like I said, I am not a computer person I am the Front Desk but I will try!
SC: Okay…. *huh huh huh*….I will be down then….
    Me: okay

………………Check in some other guest, phone etc…guy is down with his computer.

SC: Okay here it is. I don’t know much about computers…so… (I take it over & start clicking around) Now don’t view any of my porn now…*hyuck hyuck hyuck*
Me: (ignore that latter comment) Well, I am not super at them but I know mine just fine so let’s see…. (I fiddle around & it appears to be an XP machine, but I ask) Is this an XP machine?
SC: Well, it’s a Toshiba…something…(leans & reads the front of the machine & I realize my folly)
Me: I mean, what operating system is this? XP?
    SC: Yeah…I…uh…don’t know that…no idea…
Me: (I hate you) Okay well it appears to be XP, lemme see. I have never seen a wireless connection like this. Where did you go to find the “hhonors” network? (Proceeds to show me a program that is labeled like a company & somehow it shows me networks in the…well weirdest way. I try connecting many times. Phone rings, SC telle me to answer it, but I keep trying & then decide to do so.) Let me answer this phone really quick!
SC: I told you to already!!!!!
Me: (ignores him and hangs up phone) Well, I am not sure what to tell you. I am not sure why the network won’t connect. *sad face* No one else has reported any problems….
    SC: *stares at me*… … …
Me: I can reset our modem & see if that helps?
    SC: … … … So… I am screwed?
Me: I am not sure, I don’t know what the issue is. I mean some people have compatibility problems with out network & there also might be a firewall issue.
    SC: …. oh…
Me: I can also restart our router here & see if that helps. Give it 15 minutes or so and try again. After that, I am unsure.
SC: Huh….okay…uh… … … thanks for your help

Hi! Front desk person of…every trade! I can fix your idocracy! I wish!

Yeah, don't you know that we front desk people know how to do EVERYTHING?

I work in an apartment building that has free wireless access in the club room and lobby. Earlier this week, I had a resident come to the desk and tell me he couldn't get on the internet. I went into the clubroom to help him, even though I am not great with computers either. I use the wireless access on the laptop that I bring to work, so I figured I could probably at least try to help him.
But I couldn't...because he was using a Mac (I know nothing about Macs)...in Portuguese. Yeah. Not exactly my area of expertise.

You did an awesome job in trying to help him, though!
