Oddly, dollar coins are quite common now in Salt Lake... actually though it does make sense, UTA's ticket machines give change in dollar coins and quite a few vending companies have taken to giving change in dollar coins... so I'm lucky that most cashiers here accept them

Personally, I love dollar coins. Loved them when I visited Canada, wish they were more common in the US, and that vending machines took them.

They're just SLIGHTLY larger than a quarter, and therefore vending machines are capable of telling them apart.

Oh, yes - the change machine at the college I'm going to dispenses dollar coins, and all of the vending machines there take them.

I've yet to see a single machine anywhere in the Bay Area that takes them. I suppose the BART and bus machines will, but I don't tend to use them.

The gold coins are fairly common here because NJTransit spits 'em out as change. But that's more than fine by me because it's faster to pay for my fares with them too. When I used to commute daily, I'd go to the bank and get a roll of them at a time. But I like having dollar bills, too.

I personally love those gold dollar coins. I am saving those, whenever I get them.

I am not a fan of the gold dollar coins, but a bartender at one of my watering holes collects them, so whenever I get any in tips, I recycle them as part of my tip to him.

Myself, I have a thing for the two dollar bills. Collect them, I do. Not as a collector, though....just in my wallet. I hate when I have to spend any (last time I did that, had to deplete most of my supply because I didn't think to have cash with me on a long drive down the Florida Turnpike ), but am currently up to 20 of them in my wallet, a personal record. But I never seek them out. Every one of the ones I have I got as a tip at some point.

That reminds me. I have to go visit Taco Bell. Someone gave me five $2 bills last night.

I have a small stack of $2s. I cry (not really, but yeah) if I have to spend them for some reason.

Someone once told me that when scout troops go traveling, the scouts get their spending money in $2s. As I don't know any scouts, however, I've never had a chance to ask if it's true.

I recently paid for a purchase with about 7 of the gold sacajawea dollars and change. I handed the cashier the money and she took it, then waited, then looked at me and said "Your total was $7.43."

I love getting odd denominations from the bank. And I've been right where you were more than once. I even once had the police called (no kidding, the cashier dialed 911 as I stood there) because I was passing "funny" money...three $2 bills.

From a legal standpoint though, once you've paid, the transaction is over. It'd be a bit sucky to just hand over exact change that includes odd but legal tender denominations, and walk out, but not the least bit illegal. Good way to get tackled by a burly clerk though...

I don't *hate* the dollar coins, but I hate *using* the dollar coins. I like the idea of pulling a Scrooge McDuck with them eventually, but really, we use paper notes 'cause they're lighter than coins, and fold a lot easier. I've no desire to try to find a home for nineteen of the dang coins on my person just because I have gotten a weird amount of change that day while out shopping.

That said, if you want to get dollar coins, just go to your local post office. The machines there give back dollar coins and no bills at all, if you have the same machines we have (it's a federal institution, so that seems reasonably likely). I'm not *positive* but I think if you stick in a bill and press the 'finished' button it may simply change the entire bill without a purchase. I can't swear to it, though, as I haven't tried it. But they seem unlikely to give back the bill.

When I worked in the states, (Monterey, California), I would get a roll of the golden 1$'s when I went to the bank. IIRC the vending machine at work took them, as did the laundry machines at my apartments.

Now that I'm home, I tend to pick out the Loonies (1$CAD) from my change and save it for laundry (the machines here exactly take ieither 1 Loonie (Dryer), or 1 Loonie and 1 Caribou (Washer). ) so I need to keep a stash handy.

Once you get used to having dollar coins, it's really no big deal to have them; in fact it can be a nice surprise at times to dump out your change and realize you had 10$ more than you expected. (between the Toonies and Loonies up here. )

I love the dollar coins. The light rail spits them out as change, so I have a bunch. Someone paid for a $3.51 purchase with a $2, a dollar coin, a $.50 coin and a Canadian penny yesterday.

Have never heard of a Caribou and I am Canadian.
