My response to "It's not fair".

Who told you life was fair, and what were they trying to sell you at the time.

You will notice the repetition; that's what I do. I'm polite and I repeat myself.
I agree with this tactic and I use it myself. SC's want you to get into an argument with them. Unless they pay you for a 5 minute argument, it's not worth the hassle.

If that had a been a passenger the moment he called me a stupid cow would be when our conversation ended

Reminds me of the passenger who complained that not having any more apple juice for her toddler was 'terribly unfair.'

Because of course, being on an aircraft you have a vast, cavernous space purely designed for the carriage of apple juice, right?

surely SCs think even a 747 has a "back room" no doubt.

I like the one from "Oliver and Company:"

                  "That's not fair!"
                  "Fares are for tourists, kid."

But my own personal favorite response has to come from Order of the stick:

                  "But that's not fair!"
"Yes, it is fair. And that's why you're upset."

My roomy latched on to this one because he works in a CS position and is well aware that every time someone tells him "That's not fair!" it's because it IS fair. Strict policies designed so as not to favor one customer over the other, policies that prevent customers from taking advantage of their services, and policies designed to prevent abuse against services OR employees are all very, very fair.

No, we won't give you a 60% discount on the next six months of service just because you're "a good customer." No, we can't make that delivery at this time of day LONG after the delivery window has closed and all our drivers have gone home. We can't re-start your service after you've received three notices to pay a cataclysmically late bill. There's really nothing we can do about the collection agency we sent after your ass.

Check the circumstances whenever someone shouts "That's not fair!" It usually is.

                  Love, Who?

It's a brilliant tactic too, cuz what can they say? "She was polite and nice to me!" XD

That's why it works. The ruder they get, the nicer you get. Not only does it torque them off further...but there's no reason they can complain. I don't know about you, but if some asshole wants a heart attack...I consider it my *obligation* to give them one

Oh, they can certainly complain, regardless of the lack of reason.

It just makes them look like even bigger twats when they do.

I usually go this route myself, because frankly it's not worth my time to get into a 20 minute pissing match with most of the SCs I run across.

I will, however, admit that every once in a while I will take the bait and get into it with a customer if they're particularly annoying. One customer who called yesterday want to argue with me about an order she placed over 2 years that she made mistakes on - she talked endlessly about how "unfair" it was that she would have to pay again to have the materials she needed corrected and sent back out.

After what seemed like the 20th repetition of this line, I finally gave in and responded: I pointed out a number of ways in which the caller was in error and why she would have to pick up the tab to place another order - all very politely of course. It was ultimately a waste of time but sometimes I just can't resist.

Hah! The sad thing is you could probably find a lot of SCs who really do believe that airplanes have a back room, where all the good stuff is hidden away.

Very well put! It's sometimes easy to forget when one is arguing with an individual customer about a specific item but this is really the source of so many customer service calls.
