Selective Reading Failure

An old tale from the time I used to work in a tertiary institution. For some reason I was helping out one student with something, which required opening the window for our equipment hire service an hour past its normal close time.


At about 4.10pm, I had the window of our equipment hire service open, helping a student with something. The service normally closes at 3.00pm, and the notice on the closed window says so. Another student arrived with hired gear and was relieved to be able to hand it back....

SC: I came in yesterday and it was shut, this is overdue now.

Me: So how come you didn't come in today till now?

SC: Yesterday I had a class that didn't finish till four, same thing today.

Me: But why didn't you come in before the class?

SC: I didn't know the service would be closed now.

Me: Yesterday you didn't know, but today, why didn't you bring it in before class?

SC: I didn't know today either, I know now that you've said so.

Me: But you came yesterday, and it was shut...

SC: Yeah

Me: So you knew it shut by this time.

SC: I didn't know why it was shut yesterday.

Me: But yesterday when you got here and it was shut, the sign on the shut window says it closes at three. You must have noticed that and known that this was why it was closed, and it would be today as well.

SC: Oh, no I didn't read the sign. I saw it, but I didn't read it. I just left.

*sigh* At least he wasn't rude about it...

Yeah, you have to give him credit for admitting he didn't bother to read the sign, even though he saw it and it pertained to his problem.

But for all the rest, it's a wonder he's made it this far without getting creamed by a bus or train at a crosswalk.
