  • 946pm and dryer

The actual convo was 2nd hand but at 10pm I was hearing "boom boom boom boom" from above me. Noise anytime after 10pm=bad, and honestly I try to catch noise before guests have a chance to complain. So, I send up NG and he knocks on loud room's door.

NG: Yeah we are getting some noise from this room, so could you try to keep it a bit quietier?
SC: Well! That is why we wanted a 1st floor room!

This room had two small children just running amok, and after investigating they had been a walk in at 946pm. Usually at that time a first floor room still being available is VERY RARE. So, they willingly took a 2nd floor room knowing their kids would run around for awhile. Now, to me this is bad parenting. They were lucky I was below them because I nearly guarantee a room below them would have complained up a storm.

So I asked management their opinion really quick & they said to let them know if guest around them complain otherwise we would let it slide for now.

    flipping....grrr

    Dryer

Note: Our guest dryer sucks...it takes forever to dry but that is pretty much why drying is free.

SC: Hi...um we were wondering, since the guest dryer is taking forever & it will be at least an hour and a half before our cloths are dry, well...my dad needs his cloths by 6am. Could we use your industrial dyer in back?

Note: This is techincally a security risk because people in the laundry room have a clear shot of behind the front desk. Guests are not normally allowed, but we are supsta do whatever we can to make the bastards happy...so...

Me: Well...we have our laundry going right now and someone is working in our laundry right now...so...I am not sure....
SC: Well, could you ask them??? Please? We really need this done.
Me: Well...I can go ask but usually we aren't allowed to...
SC: Oh please do go ask!
Me: Okay...I will seee. (I go back there but the dryers are in the middle of the cycle, so about 20 minutes longer on the laundry in there currently.)
Me: Well, it looks like they are in the middle of the cycle, so it would have to be at least 20 more minutes.
SC: Aw...okay *just looks at me* Could you see if we could get it in there in twenty minutes?
Me: Well, you could come back because that is when the cycle ends and I told them that you wanted to use it.
SC: Great! We will be back then!

Note: It makes me HIGHLY uncomfortable letting guests have access to the landry area because of the security risk. BUT the guests are bastards who have to be always right, right? urg

And if you feel THAT uncomfortable, why on earth do your managers allow it?

Because employees' feelings don't mean shit. I told my managers a lot that I was NOT comfortable running a cash register up front, but did that matter? Nope.
Excuse me, good sir paladin, can you direct me to your EVIL district?

money is more important, and I guarantee that this stuff is rather common.

You might want to let the management know that if they fix the guest dryer so that it works properly, it might mean a smaller gas or electric bill. A lot of times the fan part of the dryer will either stop working, or get clogged with lint - this will restrict the airflow and could also be a fire hazard.

Maybe it will get them to fix it instead of having the guests use the staff dryer!

Management knows. Everyone has written up upteenmillion maintenance requests...for over a year or so now. Clearly, they don't give a damn.

Shocking they know about the dryer and don't care... considering they're spending more money by not fixing/replacing it than they are for running it.

Yeah well logic seems to escape managment & the owners that it's best to fix things when they are starting to break down then wait until they are completely dead.

Well... you *could* always bring in a few tools and try to fix it yourself.... then when the boss complains just say something like "maybe a hammer wasn't the right tool to use"

Presto - new equipment! If they try to fire you, just say "I was only trying to help!"

                    This is just wrong!

I'm not blaming you by any means. I understand that managers may override policy at their own discretion to pleease a customer, but where do they draw the line? Why would management risk injury to an employee or the risk of being robbed? Is this really worth pleasing a customer over?

just for the record, if it's been working badly for over a year, and takes forever to dry, that can be a SERIOUS fire hazard, especially if the cause is an overclogged vent hose. In seconds, that whole f*cking vent hose interior will be on fire. Dryer lint is incredibly flammable. Might wanna keep that in mind/bring that point up to management.

Better yet, bring it up with your local fire marshall.

This is when you say "No" because it's a health risk if you do let them use your dryers. You don't know where their clothes have been, what kind of soaps they use, blah blah.

Many times, management only cares about short-term performance of things. That's why they'll gladly "patch things up," instead of fixing them properly. Never mind that such repairs usually cost more than doing the job once, and doing it right, and will usually continue to work properly, longer.

For example, during the past few years at work, we were constantly having computer problems. Simply put, the terminals were just wearing out--7 years of 9+ hours a day will do that. They simply weren't designed for that sort of load, especially mine. Mine kept failing whenever I'd have multiple applications open. Load up the company's database, or run a query inside the thing...and my 'puter would literally collapse.

Boss couldn't see that it was cutting down my productivity. I kept having to stop whatever I was doing, since the computer couldn't work as fast as I did. He didn't care...until I was trying to do an important project for him. He got into trouble (with *his* boss) because I couldn't finish it on time...because the damn computer kept locking up! Almost immediately, he broke down, and bought us new terminals.

Again, he could only think of the short-term. Things only changed, when he realized that it was going to impact his wallet. That's when he started seeing things differently.
