  • Store Brand=/=Brand Name.

Thank god this princess didn't come through my line or I would have SLAPPED her.

This woman came up with a basketful of brand name crap and a $5 off any order of $25 or more Aid of Rite brand products. Coworker saw the coupon, saw that none of it was store brand and refused the coupon. Of course, Princess didn't like that.

    "EXCUSE me?"
"I'm sorry, I can't accept this coupon. It's store brand only."
"Well, I DON'T understand. ALL of this is sold at YOUR store."
"But it's not store brand. It's not generic."
"SO? You sell this stuff at this store."
"But it's not store brand, and this coupon says it's only for store brand products."

Awesome manager hears raised voices, goes to check.

    "Hi, what's the problem?"
"SHE won't allow me MY discount on my products."
"*reads the coupon* It's only for store brand products. See, this toothbrush is a brand name. If it was our brand, it would have our logo on it, but it's doesn't. It's a brand name."
"So...what are you saying? Y-you don't want me to shop here again, is that it?"
    "I'm not saying that."
    "YES YOU ARE."
"No I'm not. My cashier is absolutely right, we will not accept this coupon."
"UNACCEPTABLE. Give me my DISCOUNT RIGHT NOW."

    Store Manager is called over.

    "Does the coupon scan in?"
"Yes, but it's for store brand products."
    "Scan it in."

Customer leaves with triumphant smirk on her face.

OK.. is it just me, or does this kind of shit just not fly in Australia? I certainly have never seen it.

If someone demanded something like that in any store I've ever heard of, they would be promptly met with a "you want me to go find the manager over THAT? No, sorry. GTFO." and in the event a manager WAS involved, they wouldn't fold like that.

Is this just an American thing?

It seems that the economic downturn have created a wave of SCs, and of course it doesn't help when all these TV reports show people how to press for freebies and/or discounts.

To top it all the manager HAD to be of "help"

Sadly, no. I'm from a small east coast town in QLD, and I've had my fair share when I worked retail; Glad I got out, but that's for another time.

This story is in my opinion, the most legendary story there is. It has all the elements. Bad customer, stupid customer, spineless manager, corporate bowing down to the customer...

It's weird that the coupon scanned and worked. I thought most coupons like that would only work IF the correct products were bought. Meh.

Gaaahh. And we wonder why they try that shit over and over. Stupid fucking spineless managers. And now the EW/SC view that all employees are dumb is reinforced when the EMPLOYEE was following policy.

I have had that happen before. The SC always looks at the cashier/clerk/whatever like they are retarded.

Boo to your manager! That deserved a good swift kick in the shins.... encouraging their behavior... SHAME!
It actually made me sick to my stomach to read that. What an EW and what a douche you manager is.

                  Not true.
People have and will always be EWs and SCs, and most managers will always be spineless, no matter what the circumstances.

Our old system wouldn't allow a vendor coupon to scan unless the actual product was in the purchase. When they put in our new UScans a couple years ago they changed the software and now you can scan any vendor coupon and it will take it..regardless of the product or expiration date.
This has made things very difficult for all the cashiers, since we now have to monitor every single coupon and with a large order it can be difficult to remember if a product was in the order or not.
Some scan artists have figured out that they can go to the large Uscan lane furthest from the podium and use a bunch of coupons. The system will prompt us to approve the coupons after a certain number or if there are a few large value coupons, and then we have to go to the lane, open the Uscan and pull out the coupons and match them to what has been rung up. Naturally this is inconvenient and angers customers who are legitimately using coupons, plus we have had other customers walk out because the attendant is busy shuffling through coupons and verifying the purchase. They seriously need to update the software.
Yeah, I have had that argument with customers before...if it has a price tag on it that says, "Meijer", they argue that it is a store brand (this when they try to return an item without a receipt, since our posted return policy states that any item with the Meijer Brand name may be returned with or without a receipt for store credit).

I don't know how this system works, but I know that some places will scan in the coupon and if there is a purchase that meets the requirements then the deduction is done. Basically you can scan any coupon you want in, but only those purchases that meet the criteria will actually be deducted. So really if this is the case here, then they took the coupon, but she still didn't get a discount.

All that for a lousy $5 off.

The manager probably thought it wasn't worth arguing over $5.

Having said that, the CUSTOMER SUCKED!

I was not hired to respond to those voices.
