  • they sell my number!

SC: guy, walkin in gust. 11pm
Me: superhero, and evil person who is lying...cuz I do that.

Walk in goes as normal, guest asks about our frequent stayer program.

SC: I used to be in it, but I quit awhile ago.
Me: Has it been longer then a year? They often keep the info for at least a year.
SC: Yeah it's been longer then a year.
ME: Okay, well *Reach & get program info* Here is the information pamplet. You can sign up yourself online or I can get all of your information and immediately send it in through our system.
SC: Okay...*starts looking through pamphlet*...Where is the form I fill in? (Did I say that pamphlet had a form? No!)
Me: It's online or I can get you signed up right now. I just need an email address.
SC: (turning into a smart ass) You only need an email address?
Me: Oh, no I meant that I will need that included with the address and that normal information.
SC: *giving me paniced look all of a sudden, 3 other guests have lined up* Wait wait wait, they won't sell my inforamtion to telemarketers will they?
ME: (I have gotten this question before, people just often need assurance.) Nope, they won't. *main company* have a good reputation for a reason.
SC: THEY WILL SELL MY INFORMATION. I refuse to sign up, I changed my mind.
Me: Okay, but I do assure you, especially if you sign up yourself online, your information won't be sold.
SC: I don't want you calling me either! There is always some fine print somewhere that allows them do to that!
Me: We only use the phone number if something is left behind...If you have any problems with all of that please contact *I grab our Assistant Manager's card* management & they will take care of it.
SC: I won't do this (to program)!
Me: That is fine, it is your choice. I swear the company is trustworthy.
SC: No, I know they will sell my information, I have been told all of this before.
Me: Okay, well I am sorry...I swear they won't.
SC: You have no idea! They will start calling & hurassing me & I hate that!
Me: Trust me, I understand. I am just a regular person like you... And all other hotels will at least ask for an address....
(at this point I am sick of this & the people who have lined up clearly think this guy is a paranoid freak. Guest already gave me his info, credit card to swipe, etc etc) Do you want one or two keys?
    SC: Two would be good

He was made fun of later by the guest behind him when she said, "Don't worry, I am not worried about telemarketers or anything."

I do that kind of thing. One time I was behind a crazy lady who insisted she'd been given the wrong change, only to discover the "missing" money IN HER OWN HAND! After I got served, I said "I think you gave me the right change".

Nope but your local DMV rents lists of names really cheap-though no one ever believes the government would do that
Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes

My business law teacher in college had us do an interesting project one time:

The assignment was to attempt to open a bank account that did NOT include a stipulation in the fine print allowing to bank to disclose your demographic information as they see fit. (Ie, selling marketing firms that data that so-and-so is a <age>/<race>/<gender> who earns x amount of money and spends x amount at <such-and-such> stores at <so-and-so> times.

The point of the assignment was to A) to instill the importance of reading the fine print of a contract, B) to get us to try to negotiate clauses, and C) teach us that large corporations are more than happy to say nope, take it or leave it.

        No one was sucessful.

They don't do that in California. Murdering and stalking celebrities led to the end of handing out that information to whomever asked.
Labor boards have info on local laws for free

Once I asked this guy if he wanted to sign up his child for our free birthday club and he freaked out saying that by giving us his kid's name and birthday his identity would be stolen.

Cue five minutes later when he's checking out at my register and I ask him if he wants to save 10% and open a store card and he's only too happy to provide his social security number...his address....his annual income....

            le sigh.

I guess he's only worried about identity theft until you offer to pay him for it.
