Ok, I sorta get it, but at the same time it seems ridiculously stupid to me, since all of the beaches here (Aside for the 'private beaches" behind the big stupid fancy homes) are completely public (even the beaches with paid parking can be accessed for free if you just park up the street a bit )

Just one question, wouldn't raking the beach HORRIBLY disturb sea turtle nests? ... and isn't that illegal?

When I vacationed in St. Pete Beach Florida, they raked the beach early every morning. There were TONS of shells on this beach, so they would crush them and rake them so the beach was smoother.

I dunno. I think most of the time they dont let people on beaches where the Turtles lay their eggs? At least that's what I thought so...

Given that, to my understanding Dave's company is really just a rental agent, renting out properties on behalf of the property owners, and NOT some kind of resort (Nor the owners of said beach, and likely not the ones with the right to rake it) this request is even more ridiculous than it seems on the surface.

I've seen these kind of rental share agreements before... this is not a all-expenses included stay, not a 5 star resort with stocked swimming bar and room service, and not a groundskeeping company. They rent places, then send in staff to clean them afterwards. The amenities are provided by the property owner, and everything else is do-it-yourself.

And I'm sure if they bothered to read the website, they'd know this.

When I lived in south florida- and, caveat, this is 20 years ago now- they would put metal mesh enclosures around the nests. One corner would be bent open somewhat, so that something the size of a baby turtle could easily escape- provided they were pointed at the ocean.
(There was a going concern at the time that the lights of the cities confused the turtles, who were believed to be heading towards the light of the moon reflecting on the coean. It makes sense to me... So, if they could only get out of the mesh when facing the ocean, in theory, they'd be more likely to make it to the water)

When I was a kid, they didn't rake the beaches around where I lived; Boca Raton. That may have changed. But, they did dredge frequently to replenish the sand, so it would have had a similar effect.
I believe they also employed people to pick up trash in many areas. It may have been volunteers, though. I'm not sure.

Not around here... They just put up a fence around the nest, and post notices that if you disturb the next you can be fined by Fish and Wildlife. (and the fine is like $10,000 or something.) or you could even be arrested and charged with a federal crime.

Basically, everyone knows, don't fuck with a turtle nest

In all honesty, I think this story is nowhere near as outrageous as some of the others, like the bbq and the bicycles.

Beaches are beautiful (at least at night when it doesn't look like a sea of umbrellas)
Best time to go! I grew up within a half- to one-hour drive to several beach areas and I hardly ever go. We used to rent a house down in south Jersey just a few blocks from the beach, and the best times we had were at night when no one was there. And the sun wasn't frying my poor, pale, pale skin.
