I was about to post almost exactly the same thing! Last week was so bad around here with people using fans and such that we had rolling blackouts all over town. Man, if I had known that there was such a thing as a portable A/C and could find one I would have gladly paid whatever for it. As it was I spent a ton just going to airconditioned restaurants for dinner every night.

Me too! Guh, it was so miserable. I was actually glad to go to work because it was COOL there. My poor pets were so lethargic and unhappy .

"Poor planning" you ain't kidding! I just heard on the news that in Washington State there's a record heat wave and A/C units at a Home Depot are being sold at the rate of about 30 THOUSAND A WEEK!!!!

This doesn't usually happen in Maine, because around here summer provides a "preview." We'll get two or three days ridiculously early in the season, late May or early June, that clock in above 90, and send us to the shops to buy our air conditioners just as the shipments are rolling in. A couple of days later, the temperature drops back down to whatever passes for normal around here and the stores have time to reload. No matter how soggy I get, I can usually find an AC in a big box store if I look.

I adore my tiny little $100 window unit. I had it running alllll last night. Of course, my power bill is going to be north of seventy, but I do not care. Small price to pay for a good night's sleep.

Before earlier this week, I'd went almost two weeks without using my a/c. We have already set two record lows in July, one in June.

I don't even have AC-had it for a year-used it all of 3 times-I don't mind the heat, and hubby is from Arizona.

I posted a couple of years ago about a similar thing in the home improvement store I worked at. We sold out during a heat wave and had to deal with screaming, angry customers and then when the heat wave broke we had several returns of A/Cs that "didn't work right".

We were sideswiped by the heat wave up here in BC too. Ended up dropping $700 on A/C just so I could sleep. Its hard enough sleeping during the day as a night shift worker, without my bedroom being 36-37c degrees.

o_O I don't think the power bill here has EVER been that low, even in the dead of February "winter" here, even if I haven't used the heater at all during that time. Just gotta love a town that does not allow competition for power service...or cable service (famous quote allegedly from da mayor: "Competition for the cable dollar is BAD for the consumer")...or *grumblegrommit*....

I think the lowest I've even gotten was 97 bucks, and my place isn't all that big >_>

I think I've only had the A/C on twice this entire summer. Usually, I flip on the attic fan, turn on the room fans, and I'm good. Last year though, was another story--several days of 90 F-plus meant my 22-year-old A/C unit blew up It simply couldn't keep up with the heat. I tend to get migraines if it's too hot/stuffy--that week of 90-plus was unbearable

This is the point where I smugly note we locally just had a record low average for July. Global Warming my left bum cheek. I welcome the (long overdue) coming ice age.

Down here in the hottest spot in texas, we have been averaging around 100-110 temps (farenheit) for the past 30-45 days. So far we have had over a 100+ days over 100 degrees already this year. I think we are actually behind the usual number this time of year.





Oh and what is this 'winter' that some of you have spoken about?

I became quite nocturnal when I had no AC in the summer. I'd go to bed as early as obligations allowed me, slept through the late afternoon/evening heat, and got up at midnight or so to get everything I needed to get done done.

That and lots of slushies.

I dread the winter every year. As much as I dislike extreme heat & humidity, I'll take it over the cold. Although, this year will be an El Nino winter, and that usually means we have an easy one. I hope that's the case.

Try a winter where I grew up. ;p

Prince Edward Island. Where Summer lasts 2 months tops and winter has days where you literally cannot leave the house because the door is snowed over. Nevermind finding your car. You'll need a shovel and a metal detector for that.

On the upside we had tons of snow days that got us out of school. Because they couldn't dig the school doors out.

100 degree weather? Try 110-118 degrees. I hate it especially considering I was originally from Alaska. I really want a blizzard to hit us.
