*just to give a little background info, I do have a mild hearing loss ......details aren't important other than I can hear people when they talk, I just can't always understand (and I sometimes mishear) what they are saying*
There was an author talk/book signing at the main library in the system this afternoon, and the auditorium which it was held in had two sets of doors - one was accessible from inside the library, the other lead outside the building. We had staff from a nearby bookstore bringing stuff in to sell/for the author to sign, and they were using the latter door to get their things into the auditorium. Right as I was going to shut the door, this couple walked up, and I heard the woman say something like "Is this an entrance?" So I told her (and I was polite) that it wasn't, and that I had just been about to close the door.
I didn't think anything of this, but shortly afterwards, the same couple walked into the auditorium, the woman gave me a hateful look, and said the following - "YOU are a liar! You lied to me - I asked you earlier if this was where the *name of author* program was, and you said "NO!" (according to her, I'd said it in a nasty way) and shut the door! I don't like people who lie to me!" Meanwhile, I had no idea how to respond, because I hadn't recognized the woman at first, and couldn't figure out what she was bitching about. And even then, there was no way I had been rude to her.
Anyhow, so the librarian (I'll call her "C")who was running the program had noticed the woman bitching at me, so she quietly walked over and asked what that was all about. So I just told her that I don't always hear well, I'd apparently misunderstood something the woman had said earlier, and I was sorry about it. "C" was cool about it though, she just said not to worry about it, life goes on.....and I avoided the bitchy lady during the actual program, just in case she tried to start something.
