  • What sort of Mickey Mouse operation do you think this is?

So, this woman came into the copy center looking to have a job printed.

    Just one problem.....

She had a picture of Mickey Mouse in it.

Mickey Mouse is copyrighted, therefore we can not legally do the job.

Well, this woman would have none of that, and even tried to claim that Mickey Mouse wasn't copyrighted!

Yeah.....let's call up Roy E. Disney and see if he agrees with that statement. After all, the Copyright Term Extension Act isn't nicknamed the Mickey Mouse Protection Act for nothing.

After arguing for a few minutes about that, the woman stomped over to Captain Jellico and complained about the girl at the Copy Center, who was "rude" and "refused" to do her job.

Yes, it's so rude to obey the law, isn't it?

How dare you prevent your company from getting sued! The customer's needs are above all else! /sarcasm

Actually I wonder how many people understand that even just photocopying copyrighted material is against the law, even if you aren't going to sell it or anything. I've had SC's ask to "borrow" books in order to take them next door where there is a copy center so that they can copy a few pages. I can't let them do that because a) we wouldn't make any money!!! and b) it's copyright infringement. Why do people get mad when you won't let them break the law in your place of business?

Copyright is one of those odd things. If you are copying something for "fair use", it is okay. If you are copying it to turn around and sell 100 copies...It is not.

And it's even more complex when a third party is thrown into the mix. See, we make a profit on copy jobs. So if we copy something that's copyrighted, then we're profiting off that material, a textbook violation, even if the customer is doing something that would otherwise be fair use.

I produce a star map of the Haight Ashbury and I included what are called 'bunnies'. These are intentional errors so that you can prove it when someone steals the data. If you look at any map and many manuscripts hard enough you will find them included. When a local store made their own to give away I was able to force a C&D on them because they had included several of my bunnies.
Also, every copier and printer, B&W or color, contains an invisible code so that any law violation can be traced. The manufacturers keep careful records of every machine's signature (mostly so that the Secret Service can prevent counterfeiting but available to attorneys in a lawsuit). I used it to prove that one of my clients had made unauthorized prints and shocked them by telling them exactly which Kinko's they'd made the copies at.
The SC could have gotten your employer into serious trouble, you did exactly the right thing.

It's not really invisible. It is a series of yellow dots that encode the serial number. Here is an article about it.
