Last night we had a SC ask if she could smoke in the lobby. I told her she needed to go outside. She has her cig then throws it into a garbage can. The trash can started smoking up so I had to douse it.

Earlier this week we had a similar situation only the SC disposed of his used cig onto a pile of wood chips which caught fire.

Somebody tossed a cig in the landscaping behind Store2, once. It had wood-chip mulch and it started smoldering and smoking. You could smell it in the back hallway of the store (ironically where one of the emergency exits was). No flames, at least.

It did kinda smell good, though.

I once accidentally tossed a butt in the trash instead of the ashtray outside my workplace but my friend didn't mind donating his soft drink can to stop a fire hazard. I'd have gone in to get water otherwise.

Haven't had those in a while at my work. Last one we had we we slammed and no employees had been outside for a while. We we finally aware of it when a customer told us it was fully involved.

LP rewound the video and it had been smoldering form at least 5 minutes with probably a hundred people walk by and you don't tell us until frames are shooting out.

Luckily it was on the side we had our plants on and used the hose to fill it with water. FD came to do a formal report/investigation. Some moron tossed a lit cig in instead of the ash tray thigy.

That happens all the time at my job. The company sends out a nastygram about it, threatening to ban smoking on the property altogether, but nothing ever changes. A few months later, it happens all over again.

We had a jerk who bitched at me because there were no ash trays up at the cage. Well, there's a reason.... We don't like you smoking up here!!! He ashed it on the floor and proceeded to blow smoke in my face throughout the whole transaction. We can't tell them to put it out.

One day some a-hole actually put an ashtray on the cage and people left their halfway lit cigs up there to smoke us out of the cage. Jerks!

That's something I've been noticing a lot lately too.

What's worse is that at my hotel, there is a 3 foot tall freestanding ashtray right next to the garbage can, but every day I see 2 or 3 people put thier lit smokes into the garbage.

Yup. Same here. The cig butt containers at every entrance always seem to be toooooo far for the poor smokers to reach, so they toss their cigs on the ground or in the trash. During dry times we get lots of mulch fires from cigs lighting the gardens on fire. Lots of trash fires too. And we get the people that are so lazy they stand in the FIRE HALLWAY and smoke. We chase them out. Nobody seems to be able to read the no smoking signs either.

Funny how people panic over a little smoke, but say nothing about flames.

About a year ago, I was heading out to my car to go home and noticed one of the large outdoor ashtrays they have out there was on fire (actual flames). This was not a trash can, but the one designed for cigarettes, just to make sure there's no confusion. I ended up going back in to let security know that it was on fire.

I've only known one considerate smoker in my life. My Dad used to carry an altoids tin with him. He used it to 1. hold his ashes, 2. put out his finished cigerettes, & 3. hold the butts until he was able to dump the tin into a trash can. He never tosses a cigerette, lit or out, onto the ground. And he always stood downwind of non-smokers.
He's the only reason I know it isn't smoking that makes them a**holes.

Back in the dark ages (1979-ish) when smoking was still allowed just about everywhere, I worked at a jewelry/gift store in the mall. At one time, we had a large (about 3ft or 1m tall) brass vase that we displayed by setting it on the floor next to the door. On afternoon, I noticed smoke circling up from its mouth. I immediately dumped it upside down on the tile floor , and stomped out the flaming excelsior. Somebody had dropped a lit cigarette into the vase. Five feet in any direction, and they would have found a proper ashtray. I made sure all the rest of the brass in the store was entirely empty!

That happened to me at work a few years ago. Dumb me, I was holding my half-gallon jug of drinking water at the time, and didn't even think of using it!

Mine was a "Yip-Yap Breath Fresheners for Dogs" tin, then a covered cup ashtray that SIL gave me for xmas. I've since quit smoking (again), but I still have the ashtray cups a available for friends and acquaintances to use.
