...what it really is: a glorified Wankman.
Apple's marketeering since the original Mac has been "It's cool to be DUMB!" and the value of a techno-bauble is how much you pay for it, not price/performance.

One of the girls I work with got one, so now all the other girls have gone out an bought one too (*cough*sheep*cough*) Am waiting for the bitching to start when they get their bills and are charged for all the "extras"

Me? I will stick with my $50 base model Nokia thank you very much. It makes calls and text - that's all I need. Hubby has an iPod Touch which is fairly nifty, but I refuse to pay $300+ for a MP4 player.

...I fail to see what makes iPhones so omgmust-have. Just throwing that out there for a sec.
Because Apple has a fantastic marketing department, that's why.

Seriously, I had no desire for a smart phone until the iPhone, just as I had no desire for an Mp3 player until the iPod. I don't even know why I want one, I just do.

It's not like I intend to replace my iPod with an iPhone, either, if I ever can afford one, I'd just get a nice big iPhone to compliment my nice big iPod.

At least I didn't pay for my iPod. That thing was a gift As for watching videos on my iPod or phone...sorry, it's not happening. A 1-inch square screen means I can barely see it. I'll save the videos for my computer

BTW, does crApple still make you go to one of their stores for parts? Years ago, there was no aftermarket support for their computers. Everything had to come direct from them...at a huge cost, of course

I caved in about two months ago and got an iPhone 3GS.

I have to admit, I'm no huge fan of Apple (even though I also have an iPod), but every single day it seems I have found a new awesome app for the iphone.

I work in IT, and it really is a great IT tool, even though it's Apple.

Most of the cool apps are free, and the even better ones are relatively cheap.

My favorite app is called Orb. It was $10.00, but it lets me stream the music, videos and even TV from a desktop I'm running at home. So, no need to transfer songs or anything to it or worry about running out of space.

I could go on and on about the decent ones, but I'll stop now, unless someone really cares.

I care!! I plan on loading up once mine finally comes in.
I already have the Touch so apps aren't new to me, but ones that are good for the PHONE aspect are (all I have now is silly games and Atomic Fart )

You're probably already aware of most of the ones I like then. Meh, I'll just list them.

IT Tools (some were free, most were cheap if not (<5.00):

-Citrix -lets me get into my work system

-EZshare -basically a file browser you can use through WiFi or a VPN you set up

-iNet - lets your scan a Wifi network and lists all computers/ip addresses on said network. Only thing that sucks is it doesn't let you scan with VPN connection when not on Wifi.

-LogMeIn Ignition (this was one of the pricier ones I have, 30.00) - lets me remote into any computer that has the LogMeIn program running locally

-Ping (Lite Version) - lets you scan networks/subnets. Also lets you telnet.

                  - VNC - to remote into any computer with VNC.

There's still lots of apps for IT stuff I would love to get, but haven't yet.

                  Productivity Utils:

                  - Quickoffice (15.00) but lets you create, view change document files, spreadsheets and the like.

                  - Toodledo - Task list

                  Other fun stuff:

                  - The usual social networking stuff: Facebook, Myspace, AIM, Y Messenger etc.
                  - Google Earth
                  - Kindle (app is free, you stil have to purchase the books)
                  - Orb
                  - Shazam - identifies songs playing on the radio, etc.
                  - Sygic GPS (60.00) - yeah, my most expensive app. But even though the iphone comes with a GoogleMaps app and a compass, it's just not the same as a talking GPS while driving.

What's funny is a lot of people get the iPhone just because it's the next best thing. They don't realize how powerful this thing actually is for a fairly decent price.

If anyone knows of any good ones other than these, I'd like to hearabout them.

I totally agree! I knew I would need a Smart Phone for school and my subsequent career out of school, which, if I can kick as much ass this year as I did last, will be right out of school in May (we do placement and mine requires a lot of client-specific work from me - case files, client notes, et al. - that has me working independently as an extension of my supervisor, not just as a student bitch who files and gets coffee) and it was either the iPhone or a Blackberry, but upon further research into the Blackberry I just realised it wasn't for me.

How long did it take for yours to come in? I'm assuming you're in the U.S. and I'm in Canada and that *might* offer some difference, but I am getting a bit antsy.

for the record, I really really like my iPhone....

I've never really bought into anything Apple has put out, but I really love my iPHone, like border line obsession, , sorry guys...
Sorry, my love cannot be bought. And if it could, you obviously don't have enough in your account to do so.

                          Yeah, U.S.

Gosh, I think it took less than 4 days to come in after ordering online in June. And it came all the way from China. Seriously.

Me too. It's become one of those things that own me. Which might be a good enough reason for a lot of people to stay away from it.

A buddy of mine (unintentionally) convinced me to buy an iphone with his reasoning for buying one: He was traveling a bunch and wanted a computer with him but didn't want to lug his laptop around. And yeah, the iphone has turned out to be a mini computer. I barely use phones so it wasn't the phone aspect that got me. It is basically a laptop for me.

I got an iPhone earlier this year.

I used to have a company phone but decided instead that work could contribute £20 a month towards my phone bill (what they used to pay) and I would pay the balance so in effect it only costs me £20 a month.

And i think it's great. I can edit orders at the wholesalers, email sales reps, look up magazine info for customers and a million other things without having to make a list and do it all when i get home to go on the internet.

Plus the RunKeeper fitness tracking app is fabulous.
