  • "You people are killing me!" (sales tax, again)

Some guy came in and purchased a very expensive software package, which was $359.99. With tax, it came to $382.49 (6.25% sales tax).

He had nothing to say about the total until AFTER his credit card was swiped and had gone through, whereupon he started flipping out on my colleague at the register.

SC: Why are you charging me more than the price?!

CW: Oh, that's because of the sales tax, sir.

SC: You people are killing me with these added charges!!!!!

CW (holding up her hands): It's not us, sir, it's the state.

    SC: I'm not paying that!

CW: Well I'd be happy to return it for you, but I can't just take the tax off!

SC: Fine! Return it! I refuse to pay the tax!

CW: OK, but I still need you to sign on the screen because it's already gone through, then I'll have my manager post-void this.

Normally I'd jump in to defend the cashiers from assholes like this, but our CSL was on the ball for a change and was already there to deal with this SC. Instead I had to get on another register because this guy - rather than just taking his refund and going to Nashua to buy it, was CONTINUING TO ARGUE and caused a traffic jam at the register. For some reason, despite - apparently - being a Mass resident, he could not grasp the concept of paying sales taxes and insisted we were ripping him off somehow, and said he'd go to our Nashua store and get it tax-free there.

It got to the point where other customers were looking at the guy like he was an idiot, and finally our CSL lost his patience with this twat and told him that he was free to do that, and essentially told him to get lost.

After he left, the next few people in line commented about what a fucktard that guy was.

And before anyone says it again, NO we do NOT have the option of absorbing the sales tax for people. In Massachusetts that is ILLEGAL. I've looked it up.

I live in California. In the County where I live sales tax is 9.75%. I have to go to the next county to get a sales tax of 8.75% when I want to buy something big. That 1% makes a difference!

Tell that guy to come CA and then he'll have something to complain about.

No kidding - my county just jumped from 8.25% to 9.25% on 4/1, and it makes a huge difference. And sadly, I live in one of the "cheaper" sales tax counties around here (northern CA).

I'd kill for a 6.25% sales tax - we haven't seen that since before the Loma Prieta quake.

He should shut his mouth... We pay 9.5% in my county and it's probably going to go up to 10% soon

I only pay 6% where I am (Michigan) but I spend a lot of time visiting friends in Chicago where it's 10.25% in the actual city... and the suburbs aren't too much cheaper depending on where you area. Illinois sale tax is really confusing too...

You know, I hadn't thought about going to a different area for a big purchase before. Sales tax is 7% in NJ, but there's a few areas that are half tax to try to keep people spending in NJ instead of heading into NYC. I used to live in one of those areas...it was really nice having such low tax. Wonder what would be worth the hour drive for the sales tax difference...

Recently went up to 8.1% here, and I only noticed because the total cost of my Taco Bell #8 rose 2 cents. And a personal pan pizza went up 1 at the Hut.

My reaction was to be glad I carry pennies, and cringe at what I KNOW the retail folks went through when that happened.

It doesn't work quite as well as you might hope. Around here, even if you buy an item in New Hampshire (no sales tax), you're required to pay the tax on it (6%) when you bring it back to Maine. This makes a CERTAIN amount of sense - there wouldn't be a car dealership north of Kittery if they didn't do it like that - but it's kind of a pain in the ass. God only knows how they enforce it. (To be fair, it's probably just for purchases above a certain amount. It's late and I'm too lazy to look it up.)

And in the the UK - 15%, which will be going back up to 17.5% in December.

Of course since it is included in the price we don't notice and so no-one complains.

This is what we pay in my home province as well.

This probably explains why things are so expensive here. But I like the fact that the price on the tag is the price we pay.

There's a chance Connecticut will go down to 5.5%...but I've gotten used to doing the 6% in my head, I'll just continue to think it's 6 if it does change.
