I find it funny that they try and claim that the "NO diving sign doesn't say no jumping" seeing as in order to preform a dive you have to do some sort of jumping motion thus diving is the exact same as jumping so yes the signs do mean no jumping in.
    *pedantic*

No, it doesn't. Technically the kids are correct, "no diving" does not logically imply "no jumping". Diving implies having to jump, but jumping doesn't imply going into a dive. It's a "all squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares" situation. If a sign said "No drawing squares allowed" it doesn't mean that you can't draw any rectangles or even polygons for that matter.

If the sign said "no jumping" THEN you would be correct in saying that it logically includes diving.

To me, diving = jumping into the water.

And it should be obvious that it's because of the jumping part that diving isn't allowed.

But once again, if it makes sense...

I've been to plenty of pools where jumping is allowed, but diving is not.

Diving, typically, goes deeper than just jumping because of how you position your body. Also, when you jump your legs can act as shock absorbers, whereas there is no place for the shock to go if you should hit your head on the bottom, and you are more likely to injure yourself.

I, of course, would have stopped jumping when told to, but I agree that the sign does not imply no jumping.

That has always been my assumption in regards to those signs. Diving has a greater chance to injure yourself because you might hit your head, which has a good chance of breaking your neck.

          agreed.
