yeah, it happens. If you don't keep your computer clear what will happen is the radiators will get clogged with dust until the fans just can't blow enough air over the fins to cool anything. then one of two things happens. The Thermostat trips and the computer cuts out or the Thermostat is also choked with dust and insulated from the heat so the computer keeps getting hotter until a components gives up. a loud BANG followed by a tech recoiling rather quickly from the machine and the fuse in the plug blowing is usually what happens next.

I've been prime target material online for years, now, and the only people who've ever seemed inclined to use me for a target usually get shot down by people who don't agree with what I'm saying, but respect the manner in which I say it. There's something deeply satisfying in watching people diametrically opposed to your position in a debate pounce on some troll that decided to attack you for not thinking like them.

Duration can also be affected by animals living in the house. Cats can clog a PSU in about three seconds flat.

Cats have nothing on cigarette and... other... smoke and ash that gets into computer components.

While I was still in the house with the smokers and the fireplace and all the animals, my computers couldn't go two months without needing a thorough cleaning. Now in a smoke-free environment with just two cats, I only have minor problems with the fur. A lot easier to deal with than the smoke & ash, to be sure.
