Once again, we're in our Super Duper Uber Mega Super Stupendous Lowest Prices of the Season sale.
Today we were forecast to do about $38,000 of sales. It will not surprise me if our sales wind up in the neighborhood of $100,000 instead. From about 10:30 to 1:30, the checkout lines were backed up into girls and the line at the service desk was backed up almost to the cart corral. And did pharmacy and optical think to invite people to check out there and avoid the lines? Hell no, not until store manager told them to.
Because of the sales forecast, we had one floor person and myself for almost the entire day to do carryouts, give customer service, do price checks, answer outside calls, and re-stock stuff. You know, corporate really ought to loosen the purse strings during these sales instead of rolling around on the big piles of money we're bringing in for them.
So as I was was coming back in from a carryout. I ran into my manager and asked her "Any chance you can call somebody in? I can't keep up with everything today." She told me "Don't talk about that in front of the customers."
The customers can already see we're understaffed. I had people complaining they were waiting for ten minutes or more for assistance, and I kinda don't think that was an exaggeration. The checkout lines are absurdly long. One girl in apparel spent almost her entire shift on a register and GM couldn't spare anybody for backup cashiering at all. So what the hell difference does it make if I talk about how short-staffed we are or not?
And then, right in the midst of all the craziness, our POS (point of sale of piece of shit) system decided that would be a good time to shit the bit. Checks couldn't go through, debit cards couldn't be processed, and credit cards could only go through up to $50. So this caused a bunch of grumbling (some of it aimed at me
) and a run on the ATM, and people wanting to split their credit-card orders into as many $50 purchases as needed.
And football wasn't too good today. Corporate has decided to let us wear football team apparel on game days again so I bought a Wisconsin shirt and wore it today. It's 0-for-1 so far.
I'd like to just go to bed and say the hell with today, but I got to do grocery shopping yet, and I'm not really tired.
