  • How 'bout H1N1 for Halloween?

My mom works at a local hospital on the cleaning crew. She told me today the hospital is on a second level of alert for the H1N1 virus locally, whatever that means. If the alert level goes up another level, she will be quarantined at the hospital with the rest of the staff. That means she won't be able to come back home until the threat level goes down again.

And with some of the organic vessels for transporting mass quantities of fail from place to place that pass for humans around here, that may happen. Mom told me today that a co-worker told her she observed an H1N1 patient leaving the hospital, sans mask, to go trick-or-treating today.

(BTW, I mentioned in another thread I wasn't feeling so hot. I'm pretty much certain it's just a cold. I haven't had any vomiting or diarrhea, just aches and pains and a runny nose.)

If an H1N1 patient was leaving the hospital to go trick-or-treating, they must not be feeling too horrible anymore. At least not bad enough that they should be hospitalized anymore.

Yeah, but you can still be contagious after you start feeling better. :P

And my lovely case of swine flu started with just a cough. The worse symptoms sometimes take a while to settle in...

We just had a coworker (LaDonna, who used to help me out with the HBA deliveries) who just came back to work after being in the hospital for 4 days with H1N1 and pnuemonia.

She was out since the early part of the week before and had initially went to an urgent care (on Tuesday.) By Wednesday she was admitted to the hospital (couldn't breathe, and was getting worse) for 4 days (she was discharged a week ago Sunday) and finished up her antibiotics before she returned to work this past Wednesday.

Not only did she have a double whammy (H1N1 and pneumonia) but she's also been diagnosed with both asthma and diabetes as well as high blood pressure (she's in her late 20's.)

She had to have a note saying she was well enough to come back to work before she could set foot inside the store since we deal with all kinds of germs coming in the doors to begin with (grocery stores are a place where everybody eventually shows up.)

So far nobody else in our store has come down with similar symptoms . . . and we're keeping our fingers crossed, keeping our hands washed, etc.

While tragic, that girl DID have an underlying heart condition, that changes things a little bit.

I strongly suspect I just got over that Swine Flu three weeks ago. It was just a nasty flu that would not get better, then I got a chest cold on top of it. On one of the days I was sick I was just physically spent with a blasting headache and fever. Mentally I was wide awake and alert but my body was so exhausted all I could do was just lay in bed and stare at the wall and cough.

Needless to say it feels GOOD to have my health back. It didn't kill me, so I guess something or somebody wants me around for at least a few more years for something.

Kind of OT, but my mom gets hospitalized a lot. What cracks me up are people pushing their IV posts to go outside to smoke. I wish a clue train would run them down. They might not be there for anything lung, throat, etc related, but if they are sick with one thing, maybe they should realize that it might be caused by smoking or at least think being sick with one thing sucks, what happens when the smoking causes something worse?

I've noticed that, after I quit smoking, I can get over chest colds faster. A doctor told me that's because smoking weakens your immune system. That I was not aware of.

Whatever the heck kind of flu/cold my daughter gave me knocked me off my feet. She missed four days of school and the Thursday she went back is the day I came down with it.

Friday I missed work cause I couldn't stay awake for more than ten minutes at a time in between shivering and sweating. Didn't actually get up until late Saturday afternoon and that was only for about four hours. Didn't move much Sunday and stayed home Monday from work. When I finally got up Monday to take a shower I almost passed out from the exertion.

It's now four and a half weeks later and the coughing is finally starting to subside....until I lay down then the coughing starts up again. This sucks.

                        I'm a case study.

One of my co-workers is back in the office after being out for just over a week with H1N1. I've been to Disneyland 4 times in the last month. It's incredibly against the odds that I haven't been exposed.

I'm not even remotely worried about it.

The vast majority of smokers know what it does to them. It's not like it's some big secret. And they hate being preached at. Heck, I'm a non-smoker, and even I hate the preachy types. *shrug*

I attended a costume party on the 30th where a friend of mine had dressed up in scrubs, a face mask, pig ears and a curly tail.
