Working for walmart... in uniform or out of uniform I am not allowed to help customers if I am not on the clock.. it can be a termination offense. I have had customers I know and they will ask me where to find stuff I will generally depending who they are point them in the right direction... except for one fucknut who tried to pull the you must walk me there stunt... I looked at them at flatly told them that it was my day off and they could kindly fuck off.

They tried to get me fired... Managers response I can not punish her for what she does on her own time and that I was following policy for not helping them as then there would be a lot of messy paper work. God I love that manager.

One of the other techs and I were walking out one night, still with the blue'n'khaki, but obviously off the clock as we had our personal acoutrement. Some woman stopped us and started asking where this, that, and 5 other things were. Basically wanted us to do her shopping for her. The other tech told her, "Sorry, we're off the clock, but there's someone who can help you." That referred to another employee standing not a foot away from her!

She had the nerve to look offended.

Well, chock one up for walmart (for once).

I wish my store/company were like that. They want us to go ahead and help the customer even if we are on break and then go bug the manager to adjust our break if we have to clock on later. Which still pisses me off cause damnit, I don't wnat to be interupted in the middle of my break and giving me a little more time at the end of my break still means I'm interrupted. Plus it means I have to go about bugging the manager and hoping my hours get adjusted appropriately.

Though, I will say they are feeling threatened by Walmart and one of the ways they are trying to fight back is by offering much better customer service.

That would piss me off too. What good is a break if you only get to take it a minute at a time, or having to eat your lunch one bite at a time?

They pulled that on me once at my last retail job. I was on my lunch, and I guess things got busy. They ended up paging me personally. I informed them that I was on lunch, but they didn't care.

Luckily, that only happened once. One of the others who had been there longer than me told me that one day they got so bad with that, people started going out to their cars to eat.

And the way you beat that, as MadMike suggested, is take your breaks in your car.

We are suppose to fill out a paper if we work off the clock how ever we dont clock breaks one day I got almost 20min of break time. If our breaks are interrupted they start over and there is no bothering me on my lunch... my reg wont let me sign in while on lunch =)

Everybody should know their local labor regulations.

In California, I know that if your break is interrupted, then you are supposed to be allowed to start over. This counts for lunch periods, too. There are, of course, some industries for whom this doesn't count, such as gas stations and convenience stores that only have a single employee on duty for long stretches.

The reason WalMart has strict rules regarding working while not on duty is because companies that get caught having their employees work while not being paid get hit with massive fines, so WalMart wants to avoid getting hit for that again.

When I'm on break, I will not go back. I don't care if ten billion customers squeeze into the petrol station, once I am on my break, I am off the clock and I don't care. Luckily tho, my manager is cool and won't ever try to call me back. XD

When I worked at the garden centre, I had a walkie talkie with me when I went to lunch. If someone wanted a question answered, they could ask a collegue to ask me over it. But come and annoy me when I'm trying to eat my lunch? All bets are off and you sir, can kindly kiss my arse. XD

If I'm off the clock, I'm off the clock and will not work. (Unless I like you, you ask nicely, and the task only takes a few seconds from start to finish.)

If I am on the clock, then I work quickly and efficiently.

Yeah, screw that guy in the eye with a pointy stick. If I was off the clock, my nametag was off and my shirt was untucked (If I still had the red shirt on...sometimes I wore another shirt under it) Not to mention, I would beeline through the store to get the hell out of there before someone stopped me, and I would get on my phone as soon as I went on break so nobody would try to talk to me.

I'd still get stopped every other day. ("Where's the HP ink? DURRR")

After the 3rd "excuse me" I wonder what his reaction would be if you just started spraying air freshener...?

Next time someone mistakes you for someone who works there turn it around on them. After the third Excuse me do this, "Oh good finally someone who can help me god the service in this place is terrible I am tempted to complain to your supervisor in fact why don't you go get your supervisor right now!....." (other person protesting that they don't work here) "Don't lie to me I know you work here you were obviously coming to help me and took your damn time about it well maybe I won't complain this time but come with me I have a lot of shopping to do and your going to help me do it:"

I bet none of these people are prepared for someone to turn it around.
