    What a DOUCHE!!!!

I'm a guy and I absolutely HATE people like him. Such typical, macho bull shit! He talks about respect, but can't grant others the same curtiousy? What a douche!

Being called "woman" is not offending to me if I know who is talking to me(family friends and coworkers I like) and we are just all joking around. Like my brothers will scream at me "woman! go get me a beer!" I usually respond with a "be careful or you'll be wearing the beer." and it ends with them saying "no! be kind to the beer." or some such nonsense. But that man was waay out of line. Guess he just likes to correct the manners of others and not his own.

And his poor wife! My husband would have been smacked upside his big fat head over a comment like that. And to have his approval...oh hell no!

If a person called me "woman" I'd ignore him and when he succeeded in getting my attention, I'd say "I'm sorry sir, but my name is not woman. It's Amanda, and I only respond to that. Would you like to try again?"

"I don't know where you were raised, but here in the South, we thank the customer for shopping. Now I see you're a young thing, but if you want people to come back, you need to learn a thing or two!"

...calling a woman that you are not related to by birth or marriage "honey" is not nice and, in fact, it is rude and can be seen as condescending.
Or dating, or very friendly with. You don't have to be related or married to someone to call them honey. My best friend often calls me "honey," as well as other people....she is just one of those very sweet girls that can get away with it....though she only does it with those close to her. And I have called girls I have been dating "honey," but again, in a nice way. Not the way your example used it.

I'm certainly not saying that women who are treated like this WANT to be treated like this.
But some of them actually DO. Not because they enjoy it, mind you. But oftentimes, because they have horrible self-esteem and a terrible self-image, so they feel that it is appropriate for them to be treated in such a manner. It sucks, it's sad, but it happens.

People like that are *exactly* why some up here in the North...still think of the South as a bunch of backwards idiots.
There are rude, condescending, chauvinistic jackholes in the North, too. It is not a regional thing, Protege. There are fuckwads everywhere. And I have no bias with the whole North-South thing, mind you, being a Westerner. Just saying.

wow...i've heard of rude but that's ridiculous. the fact his wife just took it is sad. knowing that there are places where sexism is still fine makes me wanna go bombing.
Yeah I hear that. He wouldn't have gotten away with that further North. I heard a comedy routine on my XM one day. It was mostly about racism, but I think it fits for this too. On the "Welcome to XXXXX Town" signs outside of any Southern town, they should put on there what year they still think it is in that town, because every Southern town is different - they all think it's a different year. Some think the Civil War and slavery are still OK. 1930? Steer clear! 1950? Getting closer but still better avoid it. 1976? OK, at least you can stop for gas or something. 1985? OK, but get a pair of shades to shield you from the bad wardrobes. 2000 and above? OK, now we're talking.
                    Think. It's not illegal yet.

One of my old bosses (male) walked into the office one morning and greeted myself and my female coworker with -- and you have to imagine this said in a strong Scottish accent here -- a hearty "Good morning... *pause*... WOMEN!".
I keep hearing it sounding like Craig Ferguson.

Exactly. A couple of the regulars at the pharmacy call me "hon". But I know it's a term of endearment, too.

I have expressed my tolerance with being called by terms of endearment by other women and by older men (it happens down here in the south) but I have to admit I got a little annoyed with our waitress this weekend when she called my mother in law, who is in her eighties "sweetie." That would have been fine if the waitress had been around the same age. But she was in her twenties and I thought it was a tad disprespectful, although I am sure she didn't mean for it to be that way.

Just made me cringe a little.
