  • Customer has a nervous breakdown...

I've been working at the merch tables for a small music venue off and on (well up until I ended up on crutches) and it's mostly been fun. Since it's so small, the table's near the stage and I get a nice view of the concert when I'm not too busy with customers.

Most of the people have been lovely. This lady.. not so much.

The shirt this lady was looking at was a very fitted tank and she kept insisting that I tell her what size would fit. Well, I'm sorry ma'am, but since you're wearing a heavy winter coat I really can't tell. So since she was rather small, I erred on the side of caution/politeness and said probably a small, but that if she wasn't sure then she could get a medium just to be safe and she could always try and shrink it in the wash if it was too big. I also handed both to her and suggest that she hold them up and see what seemed like a better fit.

Commence her breaking down crying in front of my table about how she had just worked so hard to work off all of her weight and how dare I call her fat and what sort of horrible person was I anyway for thinking she was such a 'sea cow' (her words!)

It's only a medium and I only suggested it because you stood there whining about how you weren't sure if the small would fit for over ten minutes and were blocking other customers from the table. Get a grip!

    Sheesh.

Her boyfriend came over and told her to stop harassing me, pulled her away, and apologized to me. At least one of them was sane. (And fyi, the lady in question was really really tiny and flat-chested, I suspect she was actually anorexic or bullemic with body-image issues because she weighed maybe 100lbs tops. I feel bad about it, but seriously, that doesn't give you permission to lash out at strangers!)

I think you're right about her having body issues. I hope she gets over them but she needs to calm down. On another note, medium doesn't make you fat. Hell I'm a pretty petite person size wise but I still have to wear a medium because my body turns to go to my chest.

At a summer concert this year I, who also put a lot of effort into losing weight, was offended when I was told that the small tshirt I was planning to buy wouldn't fit and I should get a medium.
I didn't throw a fit, though, just took my small and put it on in front of the guy who said I should b wearing a medium.
It doesn't sound like a lot but if you've put a lot of effort into losing weight it can be a very touchy subject for some people.

but her way of dealing with it was still bat-shit crazy in spite of that.

The other problem is sometimes things run bigger or smaller, so one brand in a medium might be the same as a different brand in a small.

My work gives us t-shirts every year and they tend to run small. I get a medium and last year's shirt feels like it's choking me. The one from the year before is fine.

Yeah, I realize that. Thus why I reeeeeally try to avoid suggesting sizes for anyone and why I said that the small ought to be fine unless she was really worried about it. I mean, it is a concert and it's not like you can return it if it doesn't fit.

I offered to let her try one on and see since different brands are sized differently, but she just flipped out instead.

My experience has been that concert Shirts always run small... so I always end up getting a Medium -large... cause usually if they fit me at the time...once I wash them...they wont.

...That being said. I'm pretty small... no one believes me when I tell them I normally wear a large -x-large shirt for most brands. Sizes are getting smaller... so normal sized people have to wear larger sizes...I see no big deal with this.

I do to some degree. They really need to use models of more average proportions but that's fratching anyway .

I wish they'd just go to straight measurements and quit with all the sliding scales of S/M/L that don't mean the same thing from week to week.

Men's pants, and button-down collared shirts nominally have measurements...

but, then you get into 'relaxed fit' etc. because folks start obsessing over numbers instead of letters. I think that what it boils down to is, you can't fix stupid

Or crazy, as clearly evident in the SC in the OP.
