  • Pick a lie and stick with it!

So, one of my many responsibilities at a condo complex that I manage is parking enforcement. Gated community, small lot, rules regarding permit parking posted at the gate, etc... I think that giving people a 24 hour warning is downright respectful and generous considering that it would be perfectly legal to call guys like Argabarga to tow on sight.

Still, we get lots of people that ignore the warnings and get towed. No surprise that they are upset that they have to figure out where their car is, how they are going to get there, and how they are going to pay for it. I understand that completely.

The SCs are the ones that lie to me about why they shouldn't have gotten towed. I hear the lies all the time, but these were all from the same guy:

    SC: I have a permit!
Me: I have a picture of the back of your car with no permit.

SC: It was a guest pass hanging from my mirror in the front!
Me: I have a picture of the front of your car too.

SC: I never saw a warning!
Me: The picture I have of the side of your car shows that you only ripped off part of it. (Did you figure out that I take lots of pictures to cover my butt yet?)

SC: There's no signs about towing!
Me: There are signs at the entrance and all over the parking areas.

SC: You don't own that spot, I own that spot!
Me: The condo owner that owns that spot is 4 decades older than you and lives in another country. And female.

SC: But my friend rents here and told me I could park there!
Me: Even after you got the big sticker on your car saying you would be towed in 24 hours? Maybe your friend will drive you down to the yard and help pay to get your car out.

Wow, all from one guy. I would keep an eye out for his car especially and tow on sight... but that's me.

On a second read through the list of threads, my mind played a trick on me, and I thought the title was "lick a pie and stick with it." That's despite having read it correctly the first time.

And yes, this person was a horrible liar.

Me too, but I think I've established that I'm a bitter, vindictive jackass.
Excuse me, good sir paladin, can you direct me to your EVIL district?

I've got absolutely no sympathy for a guy who ignored all the clearly posted rules, then also ignored the warning he didn't deserve, then got called to account for it.

I'm afraid I despise those stickers, but only because a former landlord abused them. A couple of years ago my car got stolen. The police found it after a couple of days (yay police!) but it was missing the license plate and hubcaps (big surprise). So I get it from the police and take it back to my apartment complex. Next morning, I've got a big orange sticker on my window warning me that it's going to be towed. *WTF*??? So I go into the office to find out what's going on here. The manger very nonchalantly tells me that yes, she knew that was my car, and no, she wasn't really going to have it towed, she just put the sticker there so that I'd come into the office and she could ask me what had happened to it. She couldn't have just taped an ordinary note to it asking me to come in?? That stupid sticker never did come completely off.

Ah yes, I forgot to mention that I honestly believed that one to be true. Shame it took 5 different versions of his story before he finally decided to tell the truth.

And yes, I am a softie. I truly believe that most people will correct a problem if you make correcting the problem less of a hassle than the consequences of ignoring it. About 1/4 the cars I warn are never seen again. About 1/2 of them come and get resident permits or guest passes. The other 1/4 get a guided tour of the local tow yard.

Your former landlord sucks. Those stickers are designed to be so hard to remove that you have to destroy them in the process of taking them off and cleaning your window. Otherwise, jerks would slap them on the car next to them when they rip them off.

And that's when you give her a bill for having it professionally removed or file charges for vandalism.
