  • Lack of planning is not an emergency.

I hate working the service desk.....

For reference you can pay some utility bills (i.e. gas, electric, water, etc.) at our service desk.

Me: Hi how can I help you?
SC: I need to make a deposit for my gas.
    Me: What?
SC: You know for <local gas company>
Me: Oh sure, do you have your bill?
SC: No I have my account number though.
Me: I'm sorry I need to have the bill to processs a payment.
SC: I just need to make a deposit, so they will turn my gas back on.
Me: (Oh goody one of those people) I'm sorry sir but as part of our contract with the utility companies we have to have a copy of your bill to process any payment.
SC: (yelling now) Oh great so now I have to drive all the way to <gas company> to put in a deposit to get my gas turned on! Thanks!!!
Me: I'm sorry sir but there's nothing I can do, it's out of my hands.
SC: (yells something I couldn't hear as he's leaving)

So not only is he late paying for his gas, but it's already been turned off. And he gets mad at me for not breaking a contract between two companies without approval (we would need approval from the utility company to process a payment without the bill) and that he has to drive all the way to the company, blah blah blah. Yeah I'm totally gonna feel guilty for your lack of planning.

But-but, you're supposed to know these things, aren't you? After all, to hear my mom talk, service desk people are required to be psychic, since customers are NEVER prepared for the transactions they need.

Stupid guy. And he's probably one of those that's whining because it's so cold, and it's not fair that he can't have heating in his home, and how dare the gas company shut him off in this economy.

    Ugh. People.

Actually he did say something along those lines in his rant. I just paraphrased the rant since I couldn't remember it all word for word but I do remember him whining about the cold and that his gas is off, and .

      Some people....

Oh, great. I can channel them now.

        Kill me now.

(No, seriously, shoot me. Probably feel better than this disgusting infection I seem to have...and the 3 prescriptions I'm taking for it. Better yet, I'll come visit, and if he comes in again, I'll bite his nose, and he can feel my pain. I should probably stop typing now...?

Funny thing is that you have to be behind on your bill a couple months before they get bitchy. And when they get bitchy, they give you plenty of warning.

THANK YOU!!!!! Yes we freaking do then people get all, "But you shut me off without notice" I am all oh so you didn't get your bill, the two notices, and the two phone calls?

Even more frustrating are the pissed off people who yesterday couldn't be bothered to call in the payment for 100 dollars or you know make arrangements but today can pay 300 dollars to get turned back on.

I have requisitioned my bosses for a monkey with a stick to send to deal with SCs

And if I remember correctly, if you are at a certain amount, they are generally willing to let you pay it off in a couple of installments. That is if you call them before the gas (or whatever) is shut off. After that, all bets are off.

We bend over backwards, me especially, to work with the customer to keep their service on as long as it doesn't break the law.

It costs us more money to shut off the customer than not.

I'm not going to ruin my no killing streak by killing someone I can actually tolerate for long periods of time!

But, I will offer to let you hide under my futon and chase any other of your CWs or managers off with an egg beater, if it'll make you feel better...

Ok as long as you're careful. Knowing you you'd probably accidentally injure yourself with that egg beater.

Which is why it's an egg beater and not, oh, the belt dagger I have for Renn Faire costumes hiding in my closet. Or my santoku knives. Or...yeah, you get the idea...

                            hee hee, Lupoese.

And I figured that. Considering all the crappy people you have to deal with and all. Oh and while I'm thinking about it, hope you get well soon!

I'm always learning. Of course, when I'm sick I also have zero patience, so me dealing with customers is apparently always entertaining. I probably would've bit the guy in the nose, or at the very least coughed on him. A lot.

and I hope I feel better soon, too! Cripes, I get so whiny and weepy when I'm sick it's not funny. It's so pathetic! I'm going to take my pathetic kiester to bed now, though. Just wanted to wait for water to boil for one last mug of tea, so I can take my nighttime med dose and crash.
