  • The thief appreciated that...

A man comes in with his very young son. Son is grabbing candy, and his dad goes to the beer cooler, looks over at me. Nether of us can see each other very well, But I do see him grab two beers, twirls around and comes over to where his son is. He only has one beer now.

The kid wants ice cream, then jerky, and his dad is trying to smile at me, while urging his son to hurry because the clerk doesn't have time to waste on waiting.

They put their stuff on the counter including the one beer. I ring everything up and tell them the total. The dad uses his card to pay for the food (Which I hold onto once I see it works). He owes 1.20 for the beer. He brags about how its the best deal in town. (I didn't know it was a 2 for one deal myself....). I nod and smile while he hands me the money. I grab the beer and tell him that he just paid for the one in his pocket.

SC: "Ok buddy. Thanks. I appreciate that". *Leaves with his son quickly*

What a nice lesson. I really wanted to call him on it right then and there. But sometimes thieves will grab a simple thing and pay for another item. Whereas I propopse a trade. Their change for the item they stole. But he paid for the beer he tried to steal at least, nor did he deny it. I bit my tongue and not calling him names out of respect for his kid.

That's a good way to handle it. I guess he could argue but he knew he was caught. This way he ends up not stealing anything and paying for what he did get. But I bet he won't be coming back anytime soon either

And this is a bad thing because...?

Seriously, you did the right thing. Shoplifters suck, and the jerk is probably teaching his kid to shoplift, too.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

Sorry, what I meant was, he wont be coming back anymore! YAY! Also maybe he'll think twice about doing it again since he's not as sneaky as he thought...

Probably. Had a guy used to con his way into my home then while there would have his kids stealing my kids toys while keeping me distracted it only worked once I told him he tried that again I would have his whole family in jail.
