Almost? I'll just have to try harder, then.Quoth Broomjockey View PostEasy. Easy enough that I'm almost insulted.

"Axing", Broom, the word is "axing". As in da song lyric, "Oh I went down to/de ole Audubon Zoo/An' dey awl axed fuh you..."Thus, you'd be asking someone "where they are at" in their list of stuff.

Easy. Easy enough that I'm almost insulted.Quoth EricKei View Post"Where ya at?" -- it's the local dialect equivalent of "Hi, how are you?". Figure that one out

"Where ya at" likely originally referred to the numerous chores and tasks that a person would need to do throughout the day. Thus, you'd be asking someone "where they are at" in their list of stuff. Someone making good progress, or having a short list, would be doing well. Someone with a long list, or meeting roadblocks would be doing poorly. Thus, someone's position on their list of tasks would be analogous to their emotional state.

*hops back a tangent or two to the preposition thing*
This thread in general -- albeit belatedly -- reminded me of one of my favorite "NewOrleansisms"... namely, "Where ya at?" -- it's the local dialect equivalent of "Hi, how are you?". Figure that one out

I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to all bookstore folks for being one of the "It's blue'...
When I was Christmas shopping at West Edmonton Mall yesterday, I was looking for a book and this was the most descriptive I could be (and yes, i apologised in advance):
"It was a hardcover, had a picture of cookies on the cover, dedicated completely to cookies, and at the beginning were tips on how to pack them for travelling/mailing and I saw it at *other location in my town*" (How many vague points do I get?)
The very helpful lady led me to a computer so I could see all the hardcover books that the store had, and while I was doing that she actually went over to the section and grabbed two that had the tips to show me. I really wish I could remember her name, she was awesome.

Agent Bork: Chief, you know that guy whose camper they were whacking off in?
Agent Fleming: Bork, you're a Federal Agent. You represent the United States government. Never end a sentence with a preposition.
Agent Bork: Oh, uh... You know that guy in whose camper they... I mean, that guy off in whose camper they were whacking?

I learned all of my language skills from School House Rock. My education in public school was... not so good. And now I'm going to have nightmares about Mr. M until Christmas. I'm sure I would have been terrified of him as a kid, I was very skittish and afraid of everything.
Speaking of Prepositions, is anyone here a fan of Corner Gas?
"Who's Sarah Harden?"
"Oh, she's new."
"Oh. I'm not up on that new stuff."
"You're not up on it, or you're not into it?"
"I might be into it, if I was up on it. But I'm not up on it, so I'm not into it. What I'm into, I'm up on."
"I'm mostly into what I'm up on, but even though I'm not up on the new stuff, I'm sorta into it."
"I'm down with that."
Prepositions are fun!
