I don't understand why when I try to inform our guests of things, some of them get all butt-hurt.

Guest who is a regular came in, on her cell. I inform her she is in the east wing (there is a different elevator system).

    SC: Oh the new wing?
Me: Well, it was built in 2003, so it's not new anymore. *smily, laugh a bit* Most of us call it the east wing now.
SC: Oh well...whatever. It's still newer.
Me: That depends. (I was trying to make light of the moment with convo, she was cranky at the person on her cell she wasn't listening to.) We have recently remodeled our west wing. *smile*
SC: (convo goes down hill) *angry at me for "correcting" her* Well. *glare* *gives does it really f-ing matter look*
    Me: Eh, whatever right? *smile*
SC: (Walks off pissed at me, or at person on other end of cell...either way I am sure she will bitch.)

SC's hate reality. We're not people to them so if we correct them in any way or seem like we know more about something than they do then we're being "rude"!

I constantly get these people who give me an incorrect description on something their looking for. They'll tell me they're looking for something called "Boss Stars" and get PO'ed when i can't find it. And when i figure out they're looking for "Battle Strikers" they don't apologize for their attitude earlier but give me even more attitude because i should have been able to figure out what the heck they were looking for SOONER.

If you tell me you're looking for a friggen CIRCLE don't bitch because what you really wanted was a SQUARE.

I dunno hippie, if I was that customer, I'd probably be upset, too. In terms of buildings, 6 years is nothing. So it'd still be able to be called new, to me. Remodelled, though, would not make it new. So, yes, that was a pointless correction, and the smile could very well have come off like a smart-ass "I'm better than you" comment, especially if they're already irritated at something else. Probably would have been best to just leave it at "we just call it the east wing."

It's easy to get drawn into a pissing contest with some customers. I've had to learn to just stand my ground and keep my mouth shut about certain things. It's the same as if a customer is going off on me and name calling, etc. I just wait until I get to the breakroom and let it all out.

Myep. If I'm telling the customer something and they correct me, even though they're wrong I'll correct them one last time and then shut up if they still try to convince me that they're correct. That way I can prove to them later that they were wrong.

When people live at the border between one city and the other they will always be convinced their zip code belongs to (city it doesn't belong to) They get all butthurt cuz we won't send the mail to "their" city. They don't get that if we did that they would never get their mail because that isn't where they live.

People are uber particular about where it is they live.

Perhaps, but the west wing was opened in 2000. The entire building isn't old. Plus, I was being cheerful about it, not a smartass. I kept trying to lighten the mood.

So tell me... is Todmorden in Lancashire or West Yorkshire? The county boundary says Yorkshire, but the postcode says Oldham (which is in Lancashire).

If you know your English history, you know that's potentially a pretty important question!

my manager has a policy to "educate the customer." if a customer gives an order incorrectly, we're to correct them so they don't mess up again. i've had sooooo many people get pissed at me because they order something wrong and i correct them. i had one lady say she wanted a cappuccino with not much foam. so i told her that was a latte. she glared at me like i'd called her ugly. i've never actually head a person hiss until then but she hissed "same. thing." talk about freaky.

Actually, in the US, the city name on the envelope is mostly superfluous.

My company has put any of three different cities as the one we are located in, and all of our mail goes to the same place because it's all sorted by ZIP and then by street address. The city only really becomes important if the other parts of the address are rendered illegible.

Theoretically that should be the way it works around here too but if we address it correctly including zip code but wrong city then sometimes it gets returned to us as having the wrong address.

Also while sure if you say you live in Timbuktu but your zip code says you live in Kalamazoo we will change your mailing address to reflect Timbuktu but the service address, which also appears on the bill, will always say Kalamazoo.

And the Windsor postcode is SL, which is Slough. Windsor residents tried to get it changed, apparently.

Yeah, but that happens when you have a perfect address, too, so it's hard to say that it was the city discrepancy at fault. Heck, I've never had one returned that wasn't either a completely wrong address or a perfect address. *shrug*
