  • The Barcodes Don't Match

Yesterday, a customer came up with an item and mentioned that he was overcharged for it. I went to check and I saw that the barcodes didn't match but the description did. I refunded the customer the difference and he told me that the policy was that if an item rang up higher he should get it for free. I informed him that the policy doesn't apply if the barcodes don't match and he told me that the description did.

I ended up undoing the original refund and refunded the whole amount since where I work we're supposed to give the customers what they want. I informed one of the checkers who also works the service desk and cash room and she was fine with what I did.

There is only one remedy and while innocents may get hurt, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

      1. Get drunk.

      2. Go to a parking lot.

      3. Get all the shopping carts.

      4. Run over everyone with shopping carts.

      5. ???

      6. Profit.

Chances are this item may have been placed in the location where the item was supposed to be. I once ended up getting the lower price on a package of do-it-yourself business cards because the more expensive ones which I wanted were sitting on top of the cheaper ones for which the marked price applied, and there was no shelf sticker for the more expensive ones anywhere. The two packages were mostly indistinguishable.

I *have* seen instances where two genuinely identical items were produced with different bar codes. It's rare though.

Not as rare as you think. One aspect of my position is "maintenance labels". Basically the company altered their packaging in a tiny way or a massive way and change their UPC. Sometimes they change it for no reason I can fathom on my end. If i don't get the chance to change the shelf label, then the bar codes don't match.

As for the OP, that could be an attempted scam. I love the customers who "find" items somewhere else. I figure if there isn't multiples of them item there than tough luck. We also had a customer who would buy something from our store, get something from a dollar/discount store and swap labels, however they had the same description like 8" glass vase in the computer. Took awhile to catch her.
