I completely agree. Which is why I spent forty pounds on mine, and have worn it several times other than prom, as it is just plain, and certainly does not look like a giant pink monstrosity.

Spent 200$ on the world's simplest red dress that I designed myself.
I had no embellishments other that a star cut out of cardboard and covered in glitter glue pinned at the cut on the skirt and yet I made more of an impact than the other lady GaGa-esque girls in their rhinestones-encrusted nightmares.

My entire school life was hell but that one night made it all worth it.

Also, by the time you hit prom age, you should know enough to wear a damn pad, if only as a preventive method. Geez.

They listed that trick as a dress store's way to keep you from comparison shopping, haggling because you've already done your comparison shopping, or picking the dress you wanted in a store but buying it online where it's undoubtedly cheaper.

From a retail standpoint, that third one makes sense, though. You don't want bridezilla coming in, getting your hopes up with a sale/commission, and then going 'I'll just order this online'.

What is really funny, is that I only wanted to know so that I could email a link to my mom who was coming in a few days later to go shopping and buy the dress for me (her gift to me). When the information as refused, I decided to go to another shop, when my mom came to town just to see what they had, not to haggle or anything. It was at the other shop I found a dress that I liked more and the bridesmaid dress. All in all, the other store lost commission on a pretty big sale (my dress, the tuxes and the bridesmaid dresses) because they cut out the tags!

As I don't have a habit of bleeding out of any orifaces on a regular basis I may be wrong in my assumption, but don't most women have some sort of way to keep blood from getting on things they are wearing? I would understand it getting on underpants but isn't there methods to keep other clothing clean, especially if its only being worn long enough to try it on?

The vast majority of menstruating women are perfectly capable of protecting their clothes from become yeuchy. In most cases this includes the use of various types of extremely absorbant cotton/plastic mini nappy-like creations that go...suffice to say into decent shielding positions, which allows us to function properly!! Of course in saying this it may well be possible that these people couldn't be bothered to care...

We have Debenhams in England, which sells a relatively cheap range of posh-ish dresses in lots and lots of different colours. Went to there for both of mine (Yr 11 and Upper Sixth parties) but then again so did everybody else...

I have messy periods, and I have enough sense not to go shopping for any below-the-waist clothing on those days. But like people said, sometimes a period can come on a day earlier then expected, esp. teens. I remember how when I was 14 my period didn't come for 2 months. It freaked me out but it's biology's clock messing up.

I also have enough sense not to go clothes shopping (well, for anything I know I have to try on) if I have b.o.

Yes, it was only recently that I had my prom. No, I won't tell you where I got my dress, or how much it was. Why? Because you'll get upset with me. My dress was very plain, and thus, very cheap. Your daughter wants layer upon layer of dress, so that it stands out when she walks. She wants the encrusted bodice, with the lace-up back, built in cups, and a tiara to go with it. I had a black, full length halterneck. Of course my dress was three hundred pounds cheaper.

By the sounds of it, it appears that your dress was also 300 pounds lighter.

4. Please wash before coming out to try dresses. We don't have the facilities to wash the dresses once we have them - we have a steamer. It is horrible to have to deal with a dress that now has sweat stains. Also, if possible, please don't try on the dresses while on your period, unless you can take care of yourself. I won't touch dresses with bloodstains. You might get charged for ruining stock.

The other was a woman trying to return a wedding dress. We don't do returns (people would wear the dress, and return it after the event), and the dress had a huge bloodstain. We theorised that she didn't realise she was on her period, or something. Poor woman.

I thought that's what all guys wore to prom... My prom dress was the calico for my commencement dress. You'd be amazed at the number of people who thought it looked wonderful, despite being out of a really cheap fabric.

My aunt bought my prom dress for me and told me not to worry about prices. The dress I fell in love with was about $90. She insisted on buying shoes, purse, and shawl for me since I got my dress so cheap.

And the wedding dress I'm thinking about getting? $200, only $50 more than the most expensive "dance dress" I bought (wore it to two dances too!).

My prom dress was a clearance new year's dress from penny's. $40 for a simple, sleeveless, shimmery, midnight blue ballgown. No glitter, no ruffles, no sequins. It just needed the tiiiiniest bit of altering--some elastic stitched in at the bust. It came with a shawl that one of my teachers pinned back, and I asked my mother to braid my hair up in a bun for me rather than going to a salon. My shoes were silver, $20, bought the day before the prom because it was HELL to find shoes that would match in my size, and worn to pieces that summer because they were so comfy. And I wore makeup for the first time anyone could remember...

I thought I looked amazing that night, waaaaay better than I had any other day of high school. Never did wear that dress again, because I don't fit it anymore, but I think I still have it.

I never went to prom. I couldn't think of a more boring way to spend an evening and waste $160 minimum (the cost of the tickets). Bleh.

The only fancy dress I wore during my entire school run was for my junior high (8th grade) graduation, and my mother made it for me. The pattern was based on the pink dress Marilyn Monroe is wearing on the cover for Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, which is also the inspiration for the one Madonna wears in "Material Girl." Except the bow on the back of my dress wasn't quite so huge. And the fabric was a peach moire, so it wasn't shiny at all.

As for what I wore to my wedding, the dress cost $60 at a vintage clothing shop, and my mom did some minor alterations to lengthen the underskirt.

Urm...I wore one of the rhinestone covered monstrosities to my prom... It was an Alfred Angelo A line, in "Splum" (sugar plum, a deep purple violet, but splum's more fun to say), with a tiara and ten pounds worth of jewelry and makeup and expensive shoes that got kicked off after the first dance. I did my own makeup and nails, however. Entire kit cost $500, makeup, hair, gown, shoes, awesome 50's car best friend and I rented, corsage, yada yada ya...

Hey, I subscribed to the idea that, "Goddamnit, it's the last year of high school and I want to look like a GIRL!" I did (and still do) tend to look like a boy, so for once I sort of wanted to remind everyone around me that I could, in fact, dress up, by dressing waaaaaaay up, if that makes sense...I find it was a bit excessive now, but then, I didn't care. I had fun, and looked good.

Nowadays, looking at bridal sites for the fun of it (and watching Say Yes To The Dress), I twitch when I see someone order a $26,000 Pnina Tornai designer gown...oh my fucking GOD at all the spoiled little divas and princesses. =/ I could put a down payment on a HOUSE with that sort of money.

Yeah. She tried to claim it was like that when she bought it. My boss just laughed at her, I think more out of disbelief.

I had a fantastic boss! She knew every trick people would try, and she wouldn't have any of it.

My former manager told me of working in the Juniors department at Prom time....
The girls would come in, find a dress they liked, take ALL of that dress, every size, into the fitting room, PEE all over the dresses they DIDN'T want, and buy the one they did.
This, it was explained to me, was so no other girl would be able to wear the same dress to her prom.
