I received an AMEX gift card 2 years ago. Asked the clerk before she even rang me up and had enough money on my debit card to cover my purchase anyway if for whatever reason it would not go through. Wouldn't touch one of these with a ten foot pole otherwise.

I agree about that being easier....it's how (my department, at least) handled things whenever those gift cards came up.Quoth Shimatta View PostI get these from my dad since it's easy for him to send. Usually I'll got to a store I want to use it at and use the Amex gift card to buy a store gift card then use the store gift card from then on - it's usually a lot easier.

I'm usually okay with gift cards, unless I get those people who hadn't yet activated the card or don't know what the balance is on it. If it's a gift card that my store sells then I can just scan it to see how much is on the card; but if it's any other gift card then it will only work during a purchase.
I had a customer who wanted to use her $25 gift card, but there was only about $2.50 on it. She swore up and down that she had only used it once on the second floor, and so she should only have $25 on it. As if I'll just say, "Okay my bad, I'll change the amount on your gift card! I asked her for her receipt so that I could see what amount was printed on it, but guess what? She didn't have it on her. Luckily there was another associate trying to clock out, so she quickly told the customer that she had to call the number on the back of the card since there wasn't anything we could do about it.
At my store when gift cards are used in the transaction the remaining amount is printed on the receipt near the bottom, and I always make sure to tell the customer the amount they have left on it, and I even circle the amount.Check out my art: http://mechanicold.deviantart.com/

Phone Company gave me one as a rebate. I tried to use it to pay my phone bill on-line. They refused it.Quoth MadMike View PostA lot of companies are giving those damn things out instead of rebate checks. Believe me, I hate them just as much as you do.

They're so irritating.
I know some of my co-workers (former or current, can't remember, turnover is high) think that we can't take them. But so long as either the balance is higher than the total purchase OR I key in an amount lower than the balance of the card, it'll run. It's just a pain in the ass.
I hate the people who think that the visa gift card from the local mall MUST be usable at glitter hell, because it's RIGHT THERE.
Gah, bite me.you are = you're. not "your".

A question for those who have to deal with these gift cards - Are customers required to show I.D. when using them? Reason I ask is because I recently took advantage of a rebate offer when buying my laptop, and because the broadband account is linked to my mom's cell phone account, I filled the form out using her name. (was concerned it might get turned down otherwise)

Usually name on the card is FOR YOU, A GIFT, or something like that, so unless your name is A GIFT FOR YOU....Quoth KellyHabersham View PostA question for those who have to deal with these gift cards - Are customers required to show I.D. when using them? Now, I admit, I had one for a while. But I had the 'bad' habit of writing down every transaction and keeping relatively strict balances. So I was seldom off by more than a little bit. Plus, I used the old trick of rounding up the costs and rounding down the deposits, which helps forestall mistakes.
But, of course, not getting into any further debt (student loan garnishments are a killer) is important to me.Customers should always be served . . . to the nearest great white.

And now I understand why the cashiers at the local grocery store take the time to make sure I know how much is left on the card every time. Even if it's a new card, so all I need to do is subtract from what the big numbers on the front say...

Which is such an easy thing. So why do so many people get it so very wrong?Quoth Magpie View Postso all I need to do is subtract from what the big numbers on the front say..."If we refund your money, give you a free replacement and shoot the manager, then will you be happy?" - sign seen in a restaurant
