  • Female student would not accept campus police answer

    Long post

This happened on Monday. The only employee in the Parking office was "Nancy". It was cold outside.

I was sitting inside the booth when I saw a car tailgate behind another car at the exit gate to Visitor parking. The driver who tailgated parked behind the booth. She got out of her car & walked up to the booth window. She asked me if she could come back to the campus & pay for her parking because there was no one at the Parking office. I called that office to confirm, & "Nancy" did not answer.

I know from previous experience regarding the Parking office that..
    • they do not like it when anyone tailgates
    • "Nancy" told a customer who spoke to her on the phone at the booth last year about paying for her parking when she returned that she could not do that

Plus if I allowed her to do that & then she tailgated when the second shift attendant was there, the attendant would have made her go back into the building and pay for her parking. I would not be surprised if she would have tried to convince the second shift attendant to let her pay when she returned. That attendant would have said no. Then she might have complained to the Parking office or campus police (who would have notified the Parking office). "Andrea", the Parking office manager, would have told "Larry", the parking company manager over the account what happened. Then he would come to the campus & have a meeting with her.

So I told her that according to the parking office I am not allowed to let anyone go for free. I asked her if she had a debit card or a credit card. She said yes.

The procedure to follow when paying with your debit card or credit card is...
    • go to the Cashier office and pay for your parking
    • take the receipt you get from them and take it to the Parking office
    • the Parking office will give you a token

It's a pain in the behind, but that is the way it is done.

I was willing to accept her receipt as proof of payment if she paid at the Cashier office. So I told her she could go there & give me her receipt as proof of payment. I told her where that office was located. She told me she would call her father, who is a police officer, & see if he could come to the campus & give her $5.00. She calls him on her cell phone outside the booth... in the cold weather.

After her call ended I told her she could go to campus police & ask them what can be done because it is up to them to make that call. I cannot make that call. She asked me to call them. I do that, & I explain to campus police the situation. They tell me that she has to pay for her parking at the Cashier office & that she cannot pay for her parking when she returns. I tell her what they told me. She does not accept their answer. She asked me to call them again. I give her directions on how to get to them (so she can ask them). They are not that far from the Visitor parking booth. She does not want to do that. She asks me for their phone number so she can call them on her cell phone. I give her their phone number.

She calls them & tells them the following...
    • she is a student
    • her father is a police officer
    • he is too far from the campus to come and give her $5.00 to pay for her parking
    • she does not know where the Cashier office is *even though I told her where it was & plus since she is a student, she should "know" where it is*
    • she is willing to give them her drivers license number and license plate number
    • to please let her go for free
    • she will pay for her parking when she returns

I could tell by her tone of voice & her body language that she was not getting what she wanted.

Campus police call me to get her license plate number & they tell me that they will put a "hold" on her student account. She won't be able to buy her books, pay any fees she has to pay, ect. for the spring semester until after she pays for her parking.

I hear her tell them "That's ok, I do not care if I am fined $5.00. I'll pay it." She is pissed. She finally leaves.

Planning ahead is a wonderful thing.

That said, your campus has the suckiest parking system I know of. They go out of their way to make things difficult and vague, not to mention just generally piss people off.

Having gone to a very large university that parking is actually simpler then ours. As my mother in law puts it "Bless her poor blond heart". *no offense to any actual blonds* I am assuming from the op that the girl pretty much snuck into the garage to start in and if she had just gone through like she was supposed to she would of had no problem. If you don't follow the rules rule makers like to make it difficult to correct to "teach a lesson"

But... her daddy is a POLICEMAN... Did you get that? A POLICEMAN... One more time. P-O-L-I-C-E-M-A-N.

Don't you understand that his chosen profession as a POLICEMAN means you are supposed to allow her to get away with whatever she wants? Aren't you part of The Blue?

        [/sarcasm]

Seriously, thank you for not giving into that entitlement thinking some dependants of law enforcement seem to have.

In fairness, I never learned where the cashier's office was until a couple of years in. Although that's because my parents made too much money for me to be eligible for aid. So not all students know...

I'm not so sure she was an idiot, I think she was just a scammer. Which is a type of idiocy, I'll agree, but...
