  • Cigarette Cartons Have Their Own Price

Yesterday, a lady bought a lottery ticket and wanted a carton of Marlboro Medium 100s. When I scanned the cigarettes, she mentioned that the individual packs were a certain price and she insisted that she should get the price of 10 packs.

One of my coworkers mentioned that the cigarette cartons have their own price and the individual pack price doesn't apply to cartons. The customer decided to buy Marlboro 100s which ended up being the same price as the mediums.

Okay, why would she want to pay the per pack price for a carton of cigarettes? Cigarettes are generally cheaper on a per carton basis than they are on a per pack basis.

Ok lady why the frak would they price one pack of cigarettes one price and then sell ten of them in a carton for the same price. That's just stupid!

Me thinks it is more like this:

        Carton = $35.00
        A Pack = $4.00

She probably wanted them to give her the pack at an equal price to what it would have been had she gotten a carton where each pack would then be $3.50. Its been 10+ years since I worked at a place that sold cigarettes, but never dealt with someone like that.

No, the per pack price was cheaper than the carton price, on a per-pack basis. This isn't uncommon as there will often be deals for the packs, but the cartons almost never have any.

They're trying to get people who buy one or two packs to buy more.

Many, many years ago, when they first introduced 100s, the anti-smoking folks were all up in arms until the tobacco companies revealed that they contain the same amount of tobacco as regulars, just more loosely packed.
You can test this- if you're careful you can bend a 100 into a 'U' without ripping the paper.

Marlboro occasionally sends us cartons of special deal packs, usual a dollar cheaper a pack, but we're NOT allowed to sell those by the carton. Maybe she was talking about those?

I'll say, cigs have gone up quite a bit since then. they're almost $6 a pack here (average) and more than that elsewhere in the country. Cartons can be as much as $50 or $60, or more.

Possibly, Marlboro does send those out quite often, especially with new products. But we are to never EVER sell them by the carton.

Woah, ciggs here are almost $7 a pack (even the cheap nasty ones like GPCs and Basics are $6 a pack or close to it!) and cartons are about $67-$70.

But it's cheaper to buy a carton than 10 packs of ciggs.

Yeah our cigs have always been cheaper down here, but our cost of living is also lower, not to mention wages.

Cigs where I work are close to $6 as well, for Marbs anyway. There are some that are upwards of $8 a pack, and yes, we still have people buying 3-4 packs of them. I digress. The special deal ($1 off a pack) is probably what the customer was looking at. We have that going on right now on Mediums and a few select others that Marlboro sends us pre-packaged. We, as others have said, can not sell them by teh carton. Besides, a rule was just put in place by corporate that we can NOT take ten packs off the shelf and sell them as a carton, regardless. It messes up the lovely (read: pain in the fucking ass) inventory/restocking system they put in place last year. **sigh** The joys, the joys...

Currently mediums are $1 off per pack. So I go to CVS and get 2 packs at a time (I'm exactly who they're targeting) Normally I buy I pack but CVS is cheap and with the extra $1 off I can sort of justify it. If the lady really wants a carton at the price for the packs then she can buy 10 packs. Loose. Stuff them all in a bag for her. (Unless you have a limit)

PotatoChick, sometimes they do put limits on them. I recall Marlboro doing it themselves on a few promos we got. Then again I just sell them, I don't smoke, so who knows?

Over here the price is always per pack, whether you buy them in cartons or not.

On the other hand all tobacco products got a big price raise (between 15-30%) after New Year, due to new taxes. I bet some costumers will raise a stink even though the prices are determined by the Government and not the store itself...
