As for your "personal" definition, it carries an insanely geocentric bias. 100k would mean our most populous province, Ontario, with 13 million, would have less than 20 cities. Most of the other provinces probably would have difficulty cracking 10.

Note, for instance, that Greece, with a population over 10 million only has 8 cities to fit your number.
Not to mention that some states would probably not have more than one "city"....like New Mexico. We'd only have Albuquerque as a "city".

Add to that that there is no set population definition for a "city" or a "town" at the federal level and each state uses it's own determination, which is pretty fluid.

Seeing the talk in this thread about experiences with people griping about temperature variances compared to what they're familiar with...

I grew up in Columbia, Maryland, but when I was in 8th grade, my dad was transferred by MCI to their Dallas office. So we packed up and moved to Plano, Texas. I've before mentioned on this board that, in my experience, Texas has three seasons: Summer, Cold, and Football.

There would often be days when I started high school, the temperature would be down in the mid-60F range. That's nothing to me, so I'm going to school in shorts and a t-shirt, while the native Texans in my classes are bundled up in long pants, long sleeves, and jackets. And they looked at me like I was out of my mind. "Aren't you cold?!" ".....no?"

There was one day when a blue norther swooped in on us. A blue norther is a weather system that can cause the temperature to drop more than 30 degrees in a very short time. So it was mid-60s when I went to school, but by the time school let out, and I'm waiting for my mother to pick me up for a doctor's appointment, it was hovering around 32F, and there were flurries.

People were scurrying around in a panic, freaking out about the snow, while I'm shivering in short-sleeves, waiting for Mom. I look over and see this other student, also in short-sleeves, standing looking bored, unfazed by the weather. When he noticed my expression, he shrugged and said, "I'm from Minnesota. This is nothing."

The summers could get pretty hot, but the thing I liked about Texan summers was the fact that it was a dry heat. Now I'm back in the Washington DC area, where the summers can get unbearable because of the gorram humidity.

I'll agree with your assessment Jester except on whether a place with a population of 5000 can be called a city. There's no real consensus on how large a town is supposed to be before it's a city but I personally wouldn't even consider a place with less than 100k people as one. Unless I'm in India or China, then the minimum is closer to a million.
OT, but around here, the rule of thumb (not sure if it's an actual rule) is a city has a mayor and possibly a city council, a town has a board of selectmen and no mayor.
Any day you're looking down at the dirt instead of up at the dirt is a good day.

UK used to require that you had a cathedral. They've now started letting one or two cathedral-less places in to lower the tone of the exclusive club, from what I understand.

That depends on what part of Texas you're in.

I concede this point. As I said, we lived in Plano, in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The three summers I lived there had nice, dry heat.

Sounds like something I'm familiar with from living in Arizona. It's far more common there, though, and we don't call it a blue norther. We call it "sunset."

Dallas has always seemed humid to me. Of course, I'm used to humidity readings in the 20% or less range.

Yep, Birmingham was the first in 1889.

It requires the Queen to make a town a city.
