  • "run/rod". How not to check hotel rates for an event!

Me: "Thank you for calling <hotel/casino name> <non-Las Vegas city name> my name is Angry_Hippie, May I have your name pleased?

Idiot Caller: *garble* <sounds like> "Rod!" *garble*

Me: "How may I help help you Rod?"

IC: "RUN! I would like the rates for the <city> river run!"
(<city> river run is a huge motorcycle rally that happens every year, the dates were just announced for this year that day, it also becomes obvious callers name wasn't Rod, but he had said Run! and nothing else)

Me: "May I place you on hold while I check the rates?" (needed to buy time to look up the dates on my information sheet, lord knows I wasn't gonna ask "Rod")

    IC: "ok"

ME: *quotes each of the four nights rates as well as the total without tax*

IC: "JUST GIVE ME THE TOTAL WITH TAX THATS ALL I NEED!"

ME: *makes a test reservation to arrive at the exact total w/ tax and quotes it*

    IC: "pretty good" *click*

WTF! how am I supposed to know that just the word "run" means he wants rates for the motorcycle rally for all 4 official nights total with tax?

I work for casino customer service (IE I act as a host for those who don't really warrant a host). Most of the people I talk to are getting some sort of gambling based discount or comp. What if his plans ran different than the official dates for the festival? I didn't even get a chance to ask if he had a players club card (I maybe could have quoted even better rates or a freebie or two). If your calling to shop around BE POLITE SPECIFIC AND LET ME TRY AND HELP YOU! It really is what I like to do.

I had an awesome call for the same hotel after, where I rambled on for 40 minutes with a really awesome firefighter dad who takes his rather large family on vacation to the same place for 5+ years. I figured out a way to get him a better deal based on his government employee status. I also let him know how to get benefits and comps for his food and entertainment spend (I noticed he and his wife don't gamble a lick but they have players club cards just to get the around 10% discount that comes up for our lowest level players/non-players). He was so damn thankful for all the little tricks I gave him to get an even better deal without having to really change his behavior (he just needs to hand over his players club card with his payment when he eats, drinks, shops, or goes to a show and we can track that and reward him based off that). I have one guest I deal with on a semi-regular basis (she has my extension and likes dealing with me) and she tends to get free rooms just based on her drinking at our casino bars (doesn't gamble at all), if only she knew how often I use her as an example!

He never gave you a name, he just essentially shouted "<City> River Run!" at you as soon as you finished your greeting.

You know, like those SCs at stores who walk up and shout out an item name, expecting the employee to know that they want to know where said item is located.

It'll be fun when he decides to make the reservation after the rooms available at that rate are long gone and whines about getting the quote that nobody can confirm.

    ^-.-^

I would have been so grateful and know just he needed had he said that much! He just said "run."

For he wants a reservation, for he wants a reservation, for he wants a reservation . . . which nobody can confirm, can confirm, which nobody can confirm. Which nobody can confirm.

For he wants a reservation, without leaving any kind of a name. For he's a jolly bad SC, which nobody can deny.

        That was fun.
