  • Caught a would-be scammer in a lie

I had a guy in furniture last night who started off asking some questions about a simple glass L-desk we sell. Basic stuff, nothing unusual. Then he says he saw it at our (sister store to the north) for less.

Now, this desk does go on sale frequently (once or twice per month) but was currently at regular price. Since (sister store to to the north) is in the same district/region as us, they'd have the same sale prices, so it should be regular price there as well. However, it's certainly possible that they forgot to remove a ale price tag, but if that's the case, then the customer would have to deal with that store directly, since I'm not about to mark down one of MY desks because another store made a mistake.

But something just didn't sit right about the way the guy said it.

Me: Which (sister store to the north) did you see it on sale at? There are a couple.

SC: THe one on (major road) in (city). It's 50% off there.

He'd just named my old store. The one that - as you may recall from my old stories - no longer has a furniture department except for chairs. They don't even carry this desk, and haven't for over a year and a half!

Me: Oh, I'm sorry, but that store doesn't have a furniture department anymore. They don't carry this desk. *punches up the inventory* See? It's not there.

    SC:.............

Me: Now, I'm out of stock as well, but I can find one at another store, however it'll be full price ($170). Would you like me to do that for you?

    SC *stammering*: No, that's ok.

And he went right out the door.

I love catching people in lies!

Isn't it fun to catch a scammer in a lie? Too bad they never learn the lesson.

Oh, they learn a lesson all right - whine and cry and scream and turn into a 2-year old. God, sometimes I think the Mal-Mart shoppers need Supernanny to escort them. Maybe the shoppers at your workplace need her, too.
Customers should always be served . . . to the nearest great white.

True, they learn the wrong lesson, not the correct one.
