At my motel, we don't scan IDs, but I do need to see them and I pull information off of them such as the birthday.

If a guest complains, I can enter "prefer not to say" in the ID and birthday fields. I still need to record that I saw your ID and what type it was, though. And also, I either need your DOB or your ID to issue you a new key, so if you lock you ID AND your key in the room and refused to let me record your DOB at check-in, then your SOL until I can track someone down to go into your room and bring your ID down to the desk. So I would advise you at least let me jot down your DOB.

I worked at Target too, and that was one of the things I hated most about the job. Our state has the strip on the back, that you just swipe. However if a guest asked me not to swipe it, then I could just look at their ID and manually enter their date of birth, which cleared the prompt.

I think I'd be iffy if you had to scan my DL, you could keep the information to make a "profile" of me and start sending junk mail I didn't want...
This one club in my area apparently does that. They scan everyone's ID, at least if there's a band playing, and by the scanning area is a sign that basically says "By entering the club, you agree to let us use your personal information."

Needless to say, I stopped going there.

You could always go in with a pre-written letter that basically sets you as a no-contact and hand it in when you leave the club.

I can't imagine the staff would be too happy with it, though.

A few stores here scan ID's, but they all have signs that say "STOP, WE ID UNDER 25, We may scan or swipe your Photo ID to verify your identity but do not store the information. If you oppose having your ID scanned, please inform us and we will not do so."

And Anakah, I know what you're talking about. Some IDs have barcodes but other states have the strip that looks like a credit card. In my state we have the barcode on the back.
Ours have the mag strip on the back. Supposedly, all of the info on your license is stored on it, and that's it. However, in the years that they've had the strip, I have yet to see anyone, including MVD, use it.

You can't scan my id. Because it's a passport. I don't drive, and a passport counts as id legally, so I just use that.

But it still works, because it does qualify as a legal id form.

I don't like my ID being scanned either, I just don't it's necessary. I deal with IDs somewhat at work at certain people will refuse to hand me their ID, they'll just flip open their wallet and let me see it and that's it.

Fortunately we don't have to scan them and I hope that doesn't change.

Yeah, when I first started working at Target almost 2 years ago we were able to do that and it was no big deal. Now, however, they have changed the rule so that you HAVE to scan their ID or have your supervisor come over and clear the prompt. It's so frustrating.

That's because it's the ultimate ID. It trumps everything.

Had an argument with a douche that I used to work with. For some (shady) reason, they were redoing everyones I9. Well, I only had my DL and my passport, not my SS card (it's safely tucked away at home). The I9 states one from Column A (includes US passport) or one each from Columns B & C. So I'm good with just my passport, right? No, this douche proceeds to argue with me....and the federal form....that I still had to have my DL and SS card. He never did get to see anything but my passport, though.

Did the douche not know what "or" means?

As for the SS card, mine says "For Social Security and tax purposes - not for identification." Of course, it was issued about 50 years ago. My wife got a new copy of her SS card about 5 years ago, and it does not say anything about being used, or not being used, for identification.

This convo made me actually whip out my SS card -- it says NOT to carry it with me o_O

iirc, there is also some sort of regulation in place that makes it illegal to laminate them. No clue why.

I know that SS cards had the legend "Not to be used as a form of identifcation" on them as late as only 25 years ago, which is about when I got the first copy of my own. Within 5-10 years after that, the legend was gone.

The non-lamination is because it's much harder to fake a document printed on special paper if it's not laminated. Laminating hides a lot of the signs of a fake card.

Is it laminated, or is it coated? There's a huge difference.

Coated is a better description, and it's only on one side.
