I'm not stupid
I hate people talking to me like I'm an idiot. It's one of the things I can't stand. If someone doesn't understand what I ask them, or I have to repeat something I use the same tone of voice I used to begin with, maybe speaking a bit slower and more clearly. I don't start to talk down to someone or act like I'm talking to a five year old.
I had a customer come in the other night asking for a printer cable. We don't sell computers and have limited computer accessories. He also didn't specify what printer or what kind of cable.
I mentioned that we had one kind that was a USB cable. I asked if that was the kind he needed. He replied "USB cable..? I need a printer cable."
Ok then. I took him and his wife down the aisle and pointed out the package. It has a picture of a printer on it. I don't know what printers it works for, but apparently it does work for some printers. He says slowly like I'm an idiot "We need a printer....cable."
Fine. I replied "Ok, we don't have any then." And walked away. The wife was nice enough and thanked me, but her husband pissed me off.
Walk ten feet, you'll find help
I didn't really experience this lady too much. From what I remember, there were a few pages made to the aisle right behind my department for customer assistance.
Soon after a few of those pages I got a call from the service desk, asking me to pick up the phone call. I answer with my usual greeting "Hi this is Summerfly in electronics, how can I help you?"
The lady then tells me she's in the store by the storage tubs(the aisle behind my department) and she needs help with something. I turn around and see her at the end of the aisle on her cell phone, talking to me.
I don't know if she knew I was right there, because she never actually looked at me.
I called someone over to help her, and all was well I guess. But really, she could've walked around the corner and asked me to page someone instead of calling the store.
Shoplifters
We really need a floorwalker for LP. Our LP manager tends to sit in the office watching cameras, and she's almost never there at night. We had a great floorwalker for a while. He found another job and quit. She hired another one for the holidays. I think it was just a temporary job for him because he had just moved from another state. And we haven't had a new one since February.
I'm so mad at myself from the other day when I could've stopped a shoplifter, but I was in a worried about my future, not really focusing kind of mood. I heard some noises in the aisle next to my register. I was going to go look, but then a cashier from up front came to give me my break. When I walked back through the department to get to the break room I glanced down the aisle I heard the noise in.
There was a girl crouched on the ground, back to me. At first I thought she was trying to look at the back of something that was hanging on one of the peg hooks.
I ignored my gut(why do I always do this?) telling me to go back and see what she was really going, or to have the front desk make a security page. I just kept walking.
After my break I remembered the girl, went down the aisle and found an empty portable DVD player box. And I think she stole a little alarm clock too.
Also pretty much every other day we have these young giggly annoying teenage girls come in and steal cosmetics. My coworker giving me my break last night had to deal with them. Apparently they stole some mascara in the bathroom. When she went back up front she took the empty packages with her and confronted the girls. She held out the packages asking "Oh, are these yours?"
They said no, but a coworker later found discarded makeup they abandoned before they left.
Tiny manager rant
We have a new store manager after not having a proper one for the longest time. Department managers and managers from other stores were acting as store managers.
I'm not supposed to leave my department, or at least not go very far. I get stressed out if I can't see my department and I'm away for a period of time. There is a high level of theft, not to mention a lot of stuff like games and MP3 players locked up I have to take off for customers.
This manager wanted to me straighten a department where I would have to go down aisles and not even be able to see my area. I straightened the aisle closest to my department, where I was still able to glance a bit at the department, and the ends of the aisle on the other side. He wanted me to go down the aisles and straighten the whole thing. My department is at the back of the store. If I did what he wanted me to do, I wouldn't be able to see my department at all, and I'd be one set of aisles away from the front of the store.
I don't mind straightening, but only if I can keep an eye on my department, or if I'm not working in electronics and actually on the floor.
