  • Funny What People Think

I was on a phone call yesterday. The SC told me not to read back her cerdit card number. Ok so she is giving the card number so fast and my fingers slip on a key. So I go just on sec I have 5444 and she says, Yes just don't read any more back. Ok no prob. So after I get her cc info she says you never know who is listening on a phone. Um me thinks they will be able to hear bolth sides of the conversation and hear HER? HA HA I just said Uh and and went on from there.

If she's on a cell phone..... I heard there are police scanners that can pick up cell phone calls. Can hear both sides of the conversation. (don't know if they still make them with that ability).
That's why I myself would be cautious as the caller was being.

Not at all likely. All digital phones (all except the old brick style motorolas) are encrypted and therefore wouldn't easily be picked up by police scanners. This sounds like a questionable rumor.

Cordless phones, however, possibly still use an old analog signal to transmit from base to phone/phone to base. To listen in, you'd have to practically be in the front yard of the person, however.

      Me: Gentoo.
Coworker: Ahh. A Masochist. I thought so.

You are correct Midorikawa... mostly. Any of the old scanners will pick up cell phone frequencies, but those were hard to come by as the cell frequencies were on a high bandwith. Now, any scanner will have the cell phone frequencies blocked.

But for the life of me she thought they were listening just to me and not her. Thats if any one outside of my office would be. She would have been more then happy to read the card number back to me again. Um if any one out of my office was listing they would want to listen to HER. HA HA

My first scanner was a Bearcat XLT800. It was made before the passing of the TCPA, but sold afterwards. When I opened the box, the first thing that fell out was a piece of paper reading:
            Notice!

Due to the passing of the Telecommunications Privacy Act of 1986, it is no longer legal to listen to cellular phone conversations. Therefore, do not tune this receiver to any frequency between 824 and 849MHz or between 869 and 896MHz.

My second scanner had those frequencies blocked, but all you had to do was dike out a certain resistor and you restored them, which I did.

Of course now with digital phones you won't hear anything but buzzing. I am told, however, that with some digital phones (specifically older Nokia units), if you know the right commands, you can put them in test mode and set it to a particular channel. If someone happens to be talking on that channel, you could probably hear the conversation. Never done this myself, because I can generally hear the one side of the conversation with my ears and would rather not hear even that, never mind the other side.

You have completely confuzzled me. The... title of this thread seems to actually imply that you believe people (SC's specifically) think?? That's ... the strangest thing I have heard this year (so far). People thinking. wow. what a concept

I had a scanner I got from Radio Shack that I could hear calls on. It just up and quit working.

I use to love listening to them when I was a security guard. At one site I could always pick up a "escort" places calls... "yeah I would like a tall red head to come to my room tonight".. They would give room numbers and everything out.. I thought about calling 911 and requesting a cop come to my room.. but then I didn't want to get into trouble with the police. LOL

Back when cells phones were just starting, some reporter got a scanner and listened in on many calls supposedly to see how people were using the new device. He said that during the day, it was mostly business related calls. But after work, most of the calls were for arranging rendezvous with mistresses, girlfriends and the like.

I have no issues with people being cautious about their info as long as it is reasonably and uniformly applied.

I had one guy out and out refuse to sign up for one of our loyalty cards because he did not want to provide us personal information about himself for fear of identity theft.

                    Loyalty cards only require:
                    Email
                    Name
                    Mailing Address.

As he's checking out later someone asks him if he wants to sign his daughter up for a free birthday club we offer. Of course he does and he signs up immediately.

                    Birthday club registration requires:

                    Email
                    Name
                    Mailing address.

I just didn't understand that one...
