  • It's the law, moron

Tonight was a very busy night at the gas station. I sold a lot of cigarettes without any incident but this one took the cake:

He comes up asks for his cigs, and I get them and ask for ID, he flashes a military ID for 2 seconds and put it up, and I tell him I need to see the back to get his birthdate. he gets all pissy and tells me his birthdate. which by isn't good enough. by state law I have to actually see his birthdate and put it in the computer. I tell him this again, and he gives the loud "omg wtf" sigh and tells me his birthdate again. He says "I am 30 years old" my AM is standing right beside me and says that is not good enough, so the guy gives me a state ID and I finish the transaction, wth the SC bitching at me all the while how it is common sense and I should know how old he is automatically. So the AM says "it is state law, no please leave now and don't come back".

I'm new but I am glad to know that at least my AM will back me up.

Yeah, and he should know the laws considering he's in the military!

Astonishing AM. Where did you find him? I thought they were mythical.

Lol. My manager always backs me on this kind of thing, too; it's fantastic.

We have Think 25 over here, and it gets on my nerves when SCs bitch about being carded. Produce your ID or piss off. And don't bitch about having to show your ID every time, cuz I have to ask every time.

I bet you tend to "forget" more easily if the SC bitched you out last time for having to show ID.

I get mad when I don't get carded, unless it's by a clerk who I personally know or one that remembers me.

now i can understand why he did this, cause you basically have to be 18 to join the army and thats the age of cigarette buying but he lost all smart points here.

I'm a little sad this douche had a military ID. Not only does it make the forces look bad, but almost all the military folks I've run across have been very polite and pleasant. The ones showing their ID, at least.

indeed. especially since if his chain of command found out he was being such a prick, he could get in trouble for it.

whenever i used mine as ID i made a point of telling people the birthdate was on the back.

the only thing on the front is the date of issue and expiration date.
though technically you could tell him the ID states that he's only 1 year old then ... or whatever the date of issue would make him out to be. and therefore unable to buy cigarettes

and if he complains... then you say... "well next time show me the date of birth and not the date the card was issued" if you want me to read your birthdate.

I used to field such complaints all the time when I was the senior E-6 in my boat's engineering department. I never treated them lightly, and once I was sure that the complaint was justified, I always made sure the dick in question was thoroughly informed of the need to be polite in public. Jerks like that give all service people a bad name.

If any service member acts like a dick in public, ask for her/his name and the name of their commanding officer. Wait until you've seen their ID before you do this. If they refuse to tell you their CO's name, so much the better. You now know their name and branch of service. Contact the local Fort, Air Force Base, Naval Base, etc. Let them know, and they'll take it from there.

had one guy in my tech school who was a dick to a stranger on the bus.

he was talking about fake military IDs...

Stranger: Do you have a fake military ID?
Navy Dick: No. It's real, dumbass! SEE? *Holds up ID*
                        Stranger: *Takes ID*

turned out the "Stranger" was an officer stationed at the same base the Navy Dick was a student at. He got his ID card back... along with reprimands on his behavior in public

Not universally true, in the UK you can sign up at 15 and 3/4's, you won't start basic till 16, and won't be deployed to a combat zone till 18. At least last time I heard anything about joining up ages, 5 years or so ago.

I love the military ID. It's acceptable everywhere since it's a government issued ID.

I also believe that in the US, one can sign up at the age of 17 with parental consent. FWIW, the same applies to the French Foreign Legion, and here (Sweden), all males from either 15 or 16 and up could theoretically be drafted in an extreme emergency (think Soviet invasion during the cold war).
