I have that problem. When they need to take a blood sample, they have to go in through the vein on the back of my hand. It hurts, but not as much as having them dig around in my arm! And some provider are very, very good at getting it in on the first try.

It is the back of the hand for me too, most of the time. But they used children size needles for that, and they are too thin for some stuff they need to get into your bloodstream. This when you hear lines like: "Don't worry everybody has veins." or "I swear there was a vein, where did it go?"
Some people really have the knack of wielding needles. It still sucks when they have to stab you on a daily base.

I really appreciated the work of nurses and doctors during my recent stay in hospital, even though they had a bet running between doctors and nurses about the number of tries it would take to get a blood sample or to place a new iv needle. Yep, my veins are that bad! A second try did cost a pack of cookies (3 or 4 times), third try was cake (only once), noone needed a 4th try, phew.

Sheeesh, who angers a nurse in hospital... stupid move that! That woman sounded a bit mentally confused, though.

What drugs do I take daily? Let's see. Glucotrol, 5 mg. Useful in lowering blood sugar levels by stimulating the beta cells. Ketone-acidosis is my big fear with this medication. Mainly, I need to avoid taking a beta-blocker.

Enalapril, 5 mg. Lowers blood pressure, and protects my kidneys from the daily barrage of caffiene required to fight diabetic exhaustion. On it, I should avoid excessive salt (suggesting this medication includes potassium) and direct sunlight for more than a few mere minutes at a time.

But that's a good thing. Understanding what you're taking and why is a really good thing should you have to go see Amina for something....There are incompetent doctors out there who will prescribe conflicting drugs, and being able to spot that is always to your advantage more than it is his/hers.

Naturally, if you're prescribed a medication you're allergic to or conflicts with something else you've taken, of course you want to bring that point up. What I meant when I said I wouldn't quarrel with my healthcare provider is that I wouldn't get belligerent with them and outright lie when I knew medicine was dispensed like the patient in the OP did. That was just crazy.

The medical field is something everyone should at least know a little about. The more you know about it, the better off you are in emergency situations. There are incompetent doctors out there who will prescribe conflicting drugs, and being able to spot that is always to your advantage more than it is his/hers.

I grew up in a military medical family, so I know not only the drugs I'm taking, but the main drug interactions that can happen with the drugs I'm on.

... why do people insist on that stuff? Granted, there are (very rare) cases when the patient knows immediately what's going on and the doctors don't, but most of what they pay for is the practitioner's know-how. And in these cases? So not what's going on. Seriously. Jerk-faces.

I don't get it either, unless they're totally paranoid that the doctor/nurses/paramedics/cleaning staff is out to kill them.

I know of both customers and co-irkers who could benefit from one, whatever that is.

Wow. I just realized that one downfall of becoming a nurse/doctor/anything in the medical field is that I would be one jaded son of a bitch. I've noticed that I've become more cynical over my years with retail and customer service. I can't imagine how cynical I'd become if I worked in medicine.

There's a reason I went into imaging and not nursing. Actually, there are many reasons, but this is the main one.
