I can beat this.Quoth MoonCat View PostNobody listens. My first name is relatively common, I'd answer the phone and customers would say, "Oh, Kathy (or Holly, or Ginger, or Irene, or Sally...etc) can you help me please?"
I got Max once.

The grade above mine in grade school had Shaun, Shawn, and Sean, in a class of 26 people. It must have been a nightmare for the teacher.
Had another teacher who had a hell of a time getting names right if for some reason it connected in his mind with another name. So Jarrett became Jared and Shanna became Shawna. Also, if he had taught an older sibling of the same gender, he invariably called you by the name of the next eldest. So Aaron became Bryan and Valerie became Sarah. He taught all three Keegan boys within five years of each other and made Michael into Tom and Jason into Michael. If there had been a fourth brother, he invariably would have been called Jason no matter what his name.

Besides the fact that I am surprised that so few people here are willing to give their own first names
I am assistant coach in a Ladies' rugby team. Besides the fact that I saw Seonaidh quite often spelled Shona or Shawna and Angela called Anna, we have some non-British players (one of which is my wife by the way). One of them is a Finnish lady whose name sounds very similar to "Terry". Well, guess how does one of the coaches who sometimes come up to assist call her... yes, of course, it is evident.

Oh, gods. I get this pretty much daily and have to remind them that "Sorry, my spelling is older than yours. STFU."Quoth C. Cecil Ivanish View PostOh, I can imagine the feeling - my cousin has a fairly common name but it is spelled with one small letter change. He regularly gets heck every time he needs to spell it because he "is spelling it wrong"."If your day is filled with firefighting, you need to start taking the matches away from the toddlers…” - HM

My office-mate's brother is an "Iain". Yes, they're of Scottish heritage. The family lived in the southern states for a while, and people kept telling the mother that she was pronouncing her son's name incorrectly. ("Ee-in", same as Ian).

My first name is not common, but is similar to a common name. It's kinda like Eileen, but it starts with Al, like "pal"...I used to get "Sally" all the time on the phone. I used to say "Thank you for calling Bookstore in Town, this is ..." so I get how they're hearing Sally. But the people who insisted on getting my name before we could go on with the conversation drove me nuts, because they invariably heard it wrong, repeated back the wrong thing, I'd say it again, they'd get it wrong again (often the same wrongQuoth MoonCat View PostNobody listens. and then I'd just say "Yes, how can I help you today?") (Incidentally, I worked at one point with an Elaine, an Alina, and a Marleen, all at the same time.) There are people I've known for years who call me Aileen cuz I just gave up.
