  • Earthquakes are fun!

For those who haven't heard, this morning the city I live in (Christchurch) was hit by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake. That's very nearly the same strength that recently decimated Haiti, although thankfully we've gotten off VERY lightly so far. The quake occurred at 4.35am, and once it was light I wandered down to the petrol station I work at to assess the damage.

    ....

You ALL know what's coming, don't you? The entrances were coned off, with caution tape strung between the cones. Most of the city was without power, some roads were/are undrivable and there is rubble EVERYWHERE. So how many dickheads ignored the caution tape? During the roughly half an hour I was there, 3 vehicles drove in, despite the tape. One drove THROUGH the tape, got waved away and left, one parked at the pump and tried to get petrol (!), one backed up to a trailer.
The manager went outside and asked Trailer Guy what he was doing.
TG: Yeah, I want to hire a trailer mate.
M: We're closed. We have no power and no tills. You can't hire a trailer.
TG: I only want it for a few hours though.
    M: You need to leave.

    Thankfully, he did.

Of course, there was an almost endless stream of people who assumed that, since they were pedestrians, the caution tape, cones, and generally closed nature of the site didn't apply to them. They got told very politely to piss off for the most part - we did sort of open for people who needed baby supplies or bottled water on a cash only basis, but we quickly shut even that down for safety reasons, locked the doors and shooed everyone away.

It's been a bloody awful day. For the most part, people were fantastic (fear does that to you I guess) and very polite, although I am hallucinating the sound of the phone ringing, it went off so bloody often. Towards the end, two SCs really pissed me off - the guy who accused me of stealing from him by ringing his milk up for more than it was supposed to be (specials don't get rung up til the Total key is hit, which I explained to him) then cracked a joke as he left like it was all fine. Asshole.
Then there was the guy who cut me off as I was trying to explain something to him to ask the same question of my (male) coworker - clearly, being female, I couldn't possibly know the answer to his question.

Minor grouches, I know. But like I said, it's been an awful and bloody scary day. I've never been in a decent earthquake before and this was a doozy. It's now midnight, the aftershocks still haven't stopped, every single one scares me, and we don't know when the city will be back to normal. Prayers would really be appreciated.

There was one AWESOME part to the day though - no bloody fuel sales or gas bottles! They were worried about a possible tank rupture, since a few sites had their tanks rise right out of the ground (!!!!), so all of the pumps were surrounded by caution tape. I was dying to see some dickhead drive straight through it and try to get fuel, but no one obliged me .

My boyfriend lives in Dunedin, said he got woke up by his Aunt calling him from Christchurch asking if the spare room was made up. When he asked why, she said, "Well, let's say I could go swimmin in my basement.."

Dunno if it burst a main (It has been shoddy) but she's there now. Glad you're alright.

and yes, people react stupidly. :P

There's a few people who've had burst mains. Our water heater moved a good foot or so in an attempt to join us in the kitchen.

The hour or so immediately afterwards was the worst, because I have a lot of family in Christchurch who we were frantically trying to contact, and a very panicked mother living an hour south who sounded on the verge of tears every time I spoke to her. But we were incredibly lucky, there's a lot of people much worse off tonight.

Glad that building code there is stringent enough to keep everyone mostly safe. I hope that people have enough supplies that they don't need to come and harass you more before you're able to open up.

I'm glad you're okay. I hope everything gets cleaned up and repaired quickly--and that you get a day off before the station re-opens, since if your tanks aren't cracked, you're going to be really busy!

              Yeowch!

I was in a 3.5 in San Francisco once. Little damage, scared the crap out of me.

I can't even image what you folks in NZ are going through. Glad to hear its not the chaos of Haiti; I'm praying for ya and hoping everything gets back to normal quickly and safely.

              God Bless!

Earthquakes don't kill people, shoddy buildings kill people.

Luckily New Zealand is one of those countries who knows how to build its buildings right.

Looks like from the 7.1 quake there are only 2 serious injuries. That is the extent of the casualties from the quake.

i'm glad you're ok; fuel should be the last thing on their minds, but sc's being what they are...

                    Ah yes.
                    y but
My flatmate went into work for 5 hours while they tired to open but ended up not being able to (no water). People where moving the cones out of drive thur and then driving thur.

I will admit most the customers where ok yesterday but I had some getting pissy because when we manged to open to 1pm I had some get annoyed because we couldn't make some drinks.

I ended up leaving at about 6 because one of the aftershocks really scared me.

Wow. I've never been in an earthquake (that I know of, Idaho's strange when it comes to quakes...) but-- the very earth moving beneath your feet, like it's having a seizure? I'm scared when a person seizes-- but the earth??? I'd be freaking out a lot too-- and 7.1 is the Scary Zone. Hyndis has a point, most people die because of stuff in a city/ inhabited areas, like buildings, resulting fires, fouled water... Keep us updated on how things are going, yeah?

Sending love, prayers, special chocolate and assorted goodies to Astyn, Purple and all those around them.

I'm glad you're both OK. I know what you mean about the customers, most people will pull together in something like this but there's always one or two who don't see why their routine should be disrupted.

Glad to hear that you're alright. Hopefully everything will get cleaned up down there quickly.

I had someone leave a message for a guest at my motel last night. They had friends in Christchurch, and wanted to relay that they were fine. When the guest finally checked in, they hadn't even heard about the earthquake. I got to relay that bit of news to them.

Purple - some of those aftershocks have been good ones, haven't they? A couple managed to shake the building at work and rattled the doors, I'm not surprised you freaked, I did too. *hugs* glad to hear you're OK though, and fingers crossed it's all gonna die down.

Teh - it felt like our house was being pushed back and forth. I don't even remember hearing anything fall over, I was so scared I blocked it all out. It was crazy.

Thank you everyone for your prayers and thoughts, we really appreciate it. And yes, I love NZ's building codes!!

My sister in Aussie was woken up by her partner telling her there had been an earthquake. She had messages from Mum telling her everyone was fine, but she was still pretty freaked out, poor girl.
Hope your guest doesn't take anything out on you for having to tell them, even if it was good news .

Just to make you all feel better...It was the wee hours of the morning (I work nights) when suddenly I heard a rumble coming from all directions, like a cross between a big truck and an avalanche - and then the building started to rock. My bookcases, none too stable to begin with, swayed as if in the wind, and something fell out of the kitchen cabinets with a crash. A moment later, my roommate stuck his head in. "Did we just have an earthquake?"

The punchline? We live in Maine.

I had read about the New Zealand earthquake and, since I know nothing of the seismic history of New Zealand, was hoping that everything was okay. Our if-it-bleeds-it-leads news outlets have only been showing the buildings that got the most damage, giving the unfortunate impression that Christchurch is now a pile of smoldering rubble inhabited by the broken, the beaten, and the damned, so it's a huge relief to hear from someone on the ground actually willing to admit that life goes on.

                              Love, Who?
