If theres one thing I have a love/hate relationship with, its the children's section. Its an abomination against organization, but kids don't re-shelve. They just put it somewhere and go find another book. It makes life easier during Clean Up (running around the library throwing miscellaneous books on a cart to be shelved the next day)Quoth bardicwench View Post*huggles* I fear for your sanity. When I worked at "The Bookstore" back in the early 80's, the only section I refused to tackle was the childrens'. I even volunteered to take on the (new) computer section, instead, even though I knew NOTHING about computers at the time, and still know very little.Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

I re-shelve...but only because/when I know exactly where the book goes. I don't think it's that particularly hard to figure out where a book goes, is it? Especially in the fiction sections?
I also go to the library every week.
And browse constantly. I've had over 100 books checked out at one time. 
And I do believe that in the period of...11 years or roundabouts, I have NEVER lost a book. [Edit: Actually, I think I've NEVER lost a book EVER.] I've had some overdue, I've done the whole "frantic search throughout the whole house while I beg the library gods for mercy..." but I haven't lost a book and had to pay for it. 
I could practically move INTO the library...

I love my library. You can get all kinds of wonderful books in the library. In fact, my first book is actually in that library.
I've learned how to use the computer to look up the books I want, and I will ask someone there about a book, but only if I can't find it myself after looking for it.
Customers should always be served . . . to the nearest great white.Comment

Most of the libraries I've used are like that. They don't want you to reshelve because most people put the books in the wrong places, and certain books become impossible to find, even though they are still in the library.Quoth EricKei View Post
I worked as a library assistant in high school and college. One of my jobs was checking a specific set of shelves every day to make sure all the books were in the right order. It got to the point I didn't even have to look at the numbers; I knew all the books by their spines.
As for the Dewey Decimal System; I've noticed that public school libraries and smaller public libraries tend to still use it.
Large libraries and universities use the Library of Congress system (which is broader, much more specific, and once you get used to it easier to use), occasionally grandfathering in older books with the DDS.
I miss working in libraries. I love books
