Wasn't it reported a while back that they did away with the Dewey Decimal System?
In the US, there are 2 primary methods for issuing call numbers: Dewey (used primarily by public libraries) and LC/Library of Congress, used primarily by academic and specialty libraries.

It's been awhile since I've dealt with Dewey. Everything around here is LC.

Most of the libraries I've used are like that. They don't want you to reshelve because most people put the books in the wrong places, and certain books become impossible to find, even though they are still in the library.
Also, a lot of libraries keep statistics on "internal use", and the easiest way to track that is by keeping track of the number of materials returned to the shelves.

We have a special check-in procedure for internal use. :P

Right. But if a patron re-shelves the book, then it won't go through the internal use procedure.

That, and the books are likely to end up a random distance from where they actually belong. The likelyhood of them being within arm's reach of the *proper* location varies inversely with the demand for said book ~_~

You need to find out how much of the local taxes go to the library and inform them that because of the little amount of your time they pay for today isn't there day to control you... tomorrow isn't looking that good either.
I'm sorry reading is not a new concept it has been widely taught in our nation for at least the past 100 years. Please, learn to do it CORRECTLY before you become contagious.

I overheard a coworker talking about that unshelved comic. Small world.

Just for the record, travel is in the 900's. Why do I know? I have no life. I don't even work in the library, I just really like reading travel books. It's the next best thing to actually travelling.

Hawaii? Who's going to Hawaii? Am I going to Hawaii?
                          Stop saying Hawaii!

I love those kind of customers, the ones who expect you to memorise the entire layout of your workplace. XD When I worked in the supermarket, I used to get those all the time. I wanted to say, "I am a checkout cashier. I walk from the staff area to the tills. I don't know fuck all about where anything is. That's why you ask the guy stacking shelves, not the girl on the till." XXD

That reminds me. WHICH ONE OF YOU TROLLED ME IRL?!

After the little LC/Dewey debate I had someone walk up to me and go

                              "is this dewey or congress?"

                              "O_o.. dewey"

                              "thanks" *walks off*

I am a page also, and in my library we can tell people where the general area's are, but we can't really show them where the book is. My supervisor told me that I was paid to shelve the books not talk to patrons. So I have to tell anyone who asks me a question to go to the Reference desk. I also get stared at a lot. After a while you kind of get used to it and you don't really notice it.

I was asked one day if we "had a ladies restroom on this side of the world?" by a lady. I don't think English was her first language, but she didn't have an accent either...
