  • Paranoid, Stupid, or Both?

Just a small post here, but wow. Background: Whenever we check someone's ID at the C-store, we flip it over and scan the back (provided it's not military and has the correct barcode thing on the back) to verify their age. All that it does, I swear, is verify that they are old enough to buy whatever age restricted thing they've brought to the counter. Well, according to one jackass sucktomer tonight, it does more. The players in this tale are jackass sucktomer (JS) and ME.

ME: **rings guy up, asks for ID*
JS: **hands ID, pays, takes ID back, looks at me** Is it company policy to scan the back of the ID?
    ME: Yes it is, wh--
JS: I'm just asking because you scan my ID and I end up getting ads for cigarettes that i don't want, and it pisses me off!
ME: Well, I don't know how that's possible.
JS: The information is in the ID! I'm not pissed at you but it just pissed me off! *RAGE*
ME: Well I'm sorry about that. You have a great night now.
JS: Yeah. **snatches brown bag off the counter and stomps out the door**
ME: Because I needed that tonight...

What I wanted to tell him was he probably signed up for something online without knowing, or some other company that sells information like that did it and he didn't know it. The ONLY THING scanning IDs does is verify the age. That's it. Fucktard!

The only other thing I have heard about scanning IDs was that some bars (obviously ones with more well-off owners) scan them because it can show if the person is on probation/parole/has a warrant out.

In our state the ID has a symbol right on the front that shows if you are on probation/parole - no hiding it.
As for the warrant thing- do they get a reward for turning those folks in?

auntiem -- Cool ^_^ The closest my state does to that (afaik) is that they punch a hole in your license if it's been revoked (they let you keep it, presumably for ID purposes, but you still cannot drive with it).

I have to say, I would not be surprised if the company was selling the information. My husband used to play a personal game where he would sign up for something using a fake name (a name that sounds like a 70s porn star) and then wait to see what pops up as snail mail and his secondary, seldom-used email account. It can be very interesting.

I did that with my cat's name (Fenris DeNeko). She got sent a free Quatro razor, once.

I'm not sure what happens when someone attempts to go into a bar while on paper and the place uses a scanner.......the only bar that had that technology ended up quitting using it because business went down (and that stuff is expensive), so now they just have a blacklist of people who aren't allowed in. I'm assuming it's people who have been kicked out before/banned or people who are knowingly trying to go in while on probation/parole.

Whenever someone is doing a credit card transaction with us some DL's will have the black strip on the back to which we swipe and all their info pops up like their address and name. I like the IDs that have the swipe on the bank, many don't.

Which is exactly why I absolutely refuse to allow people to swipe my DL. It's been proven multiple times that many companies who do this store the information. If someone needs to see my license, I have a little slide out thing on my wallet I keep it in. If I absolutely need to take it out, I inform the register person that they do not have my consent to scan it.
