I think the assumption that the people there were Mexican is fairly likely to be correct; by far the greatest population of Hispanics in my state are of Mexican descent. It was just this crazy-awful-off-the-wall, not to be doubted tone in her voice that of course her doctor should know better than to let "those people" into his office in the first place; much less allow them to (have appointments ahead of her, sit in the waiting room chairs next to her, talk with each other in Spanish, take your pick.)

When I took the call, I hadn't yet gotten married; but my husband is Hispanic and my last name is now a very Mexican-sounding name. I wonder what she would have said to me on the phone if that had been my name at the time.....

What the doctor probably said "I'm afraid to say that you are medically obese and if you continue your current lifestyle your health will suffer, i'd recommend adjusting your diet or perhaps a new exercise regime"

I read this not as a complaint against Mexicans being in the waiting room, but rather a complaint about the number of them that were there. Perhaps they took all the seats leaving her with no place to sit, thus fewer Mexicans would have been acceptable if she had a seat.

I can only offer this as one possible reason: They didn't realize it was a pediatrician.

The only reason I suggest this is because my ex's specialist to help him with his diabetes was primarily a pediatrician, but also the local go-to guy for type 1 diabetics.

I'm surprised they could hear the kid over their own moaning and whining If you're in the ER, chances are that you're in pain! I feel sorry for your little one, having to put up with people like that >_<

there are numerous spanish speaking countries in the world. Call my BIL a Mexican and he will go off on you in both english and spanish.....he is very proud of his Argentinian heritage.

I do some part time work in a store where the manager is a Hasidic Jew, and looks the part: long black coat, grey beard, side locks, flat brim hat, the works. He also just happens to have been born in Buenos Aires, which is where his folks wound up as refugees during WWII.

He put a big neon "Hablamos Español" sign in the window. It's hilarious when someone comes in looking for the one employee who speaks Spanish, and it turns out to be the guy who looks like a rabbi...

(Admittedly his Spanish has a strong German accent, but it's perfectly understandable. That's not all that uncommon in Argentinians, from what I understand; his family weren't the only refugees from Eastern Europe who wound up there.)
