  • Simple, the new WTF concept

Another short and stupid story. The SC comes up to the counter holding a item.

SC: *holding a package* Do you have any fresh <items>?
Me: Let me see. *I get the package from the SC and check the sticker* Ma'am this was just put out about 10 minutes ago *points to date/time stamp*.
SC: But I want a freeeesh one! This is stale!
Me: I have more in the freezer if you want one.
SC: Yes, please. A FRESH one.

I go get the item from the freezer, print out the label for it (of course it has the same sell by date on it because it was well done a whole 15 minutes apart from the other one)

Me: Here you go. *hands SC <item>*
SC: *looks at date* I said I wanted a FRESH one, this is the same.
Me: Yes. They have a three day shelf life. This is the same because the other one was put out out earlier today.
SC: But it's not needed until tomorrow. It will be stale.
Me: if you want, you can keep it frozen until a few hours before you need it for the freshest product.
SC: Never mind, I have never had good luck at <company stores> trying to get people to understand the simplest concepts! *stomps off*

I don't think they understand the definition of simple, or at least the normal person definition. Only the SC version.

Everything has to be perfect in their eyes. Too bad they're not intelligent enough to understand perfect for real.
Customers should always be served . . . to the nearest great white.

In their world, being perfect means being stoopid...

So... she thinks one that is all of ten minutes old is stale, but one that will be a day old by the time she intends to use it will not be?

I think it is the SC, poor dear, who is having trouble understanding the "simplest concept".

Some people think that items can start the spoilage process upon purchase...like the bread/produce/deli/fish case has some magical antibacterial properties.

That's the only explanation I can come up with, anyway. That or they've bought into the concept of refrigerators that can automagically produce what they need not a minute sooner than when they need it, so anything that needs to be transported by hand confuses them.

I'm wondering why she didn't wait until the day of to buy whatever it was if she was that concerned about freshness.

Too bad you couldn't have gotten away with printing out another label with the" Sell By:" as a day later.

It's the price scanner at the register.

It electronically removes any preservatives in the food, and the decomposition begins.

The only thing I can think of was that she meant "fresh" as in "not frozen" ...?

She was an idiot. It wasn't stale. I know people like that. Put a pack of cookies out at the coffee station at work. Next day, someone wants to throw them out because "they've been there since yesterday. They're stale." Gahhhh....

When I worked at my community market (not Walmart, before that) the bread person was my best friend .. in that they gave me free day old bread. All I could carry, because "We have to throw it out". Of course this was for me, because it was just as good.

That's...odd... We have "bread thrift stores" around here where (commerically packaged) bread and similar items end up on Day 2, along with massive discounts. I would imagine that they exist in many cities. The people working there swear up and down that it's all Day 1 food that they just didn't have room to accept at the stores, but, the dates on most of what they carry suggest otherwise. The only caveat I have for there is, avoid the el cheapo bin up front. When you have TWINKIES that are close to expiring, you know they're old...

I'm assuming people like that we taught by someone that it is stale and don't even try eating it it will be so bad, hence they never realized that it is not inedible.

I think the OP should take a product near the exp. date, put it in the freezer, and save it for the SCs next visit.
