  • Don't you have bigger bills?

BG: I work at that place that sells those noodle dishes.. and I'm a server/cashier/bus girl/garnisher/salad maker...

anyway I was working the register all day yesterday. A guest in line WATCHED (from about five people back in line) as my manager made me switch registers as she changed drawers from our AM drawer to PM drawer, which means it's a fresh drawer. He even commented to his girlfriend about how they do that at his place of work as well. [/bg]

I work through the line and this guy and his girlfriend finally get to order. Their total comes to $19.??.. and he pulls out a handful of bills, flicks past several 10's and 20's.. and drops a 100 on the counter (side note, I am officially irritated as my hand was held out and he just drops the bill RIGHT BESIDE MY HAND onto the counter) I HAVE to take it, since even a fresh drawer has $200 in it, so I can make the change.. but it's not going to be nice.
I pick up the bill, and open my drawer, and sigh. I have 1 20, 2 10s, and a bunch of 5s and 1s. I count out his $80, and set it with his drink cups and table number on the counter. He picks up his change and glares at me, frowning at the money in his hand.
SC: Can't you make my change any differently?
Me: Sir, this is what I have. In my drawer now, I have your 100, more 5s, and a lot of 1s and change. If you'd like, I can give you some 1s and quarters?
SC: *glare* no, I mean, don't you have any LARGER bills for change?
Me: No sir, as I said, I gave you all of the 20s and 10s in my drawer. If you'd like to trade me one of those 20s and give me back the bills I gave you, your change will be the coins in your hand and you won't have so many 5s. *sweet smile*
SC: *more glaring* no this is fine.
He then snatches his cup off of the counter with such force that he actually ends up swatting it onto the floor, making a loud racket (plastic cup on tile floor is loud and bounces around a lot) By the time he picks it up and turns around to me, I'm already standing there with that same sugary smile on my face, holding a fresh cup, which he takes carefully from me, mumbling "thanks" and walks off.

I don't really so much mind breaking the $100, we get quite a few 100s and 50s but usually they're buying a LOT of food, we have one woman who comes in and gets almost $70 worth of food, and pays with a $100, but that's not so bad..

Dude, why? What was the point?

I don't understand why people do this. If I have a choice, I pay with the closest denomination note I've got. This guy knew you didn't have a ton of large bills in your till, having seen you change tills and commenting that his place of work did that too. He knew it. So, he must've just decided to be an ass. Well, I hope someone does the same to him sometime soon.

I *almost* hope that the next time someone pays him at work with a big bill that it turns out to be counterfeit. But, that would be mean of me to actually hope that.

i can think of many reasons: he wanted to impress you and his girlfriend/date, he's a dick, he thinks of everyplace that deals in food/retail as his personal change machine.

at the root of it all, he's a dick.

He's a dick. I only pay with a $100 if that's the ONLY bill I have, and I feel horrible about it. He didn't have to pay with $100 if he had all those $20s and shit.

Could i get and carry a $100? Yes. Do I? No. Most, actually 99.99% of the time I have no need for a $100, $20s will do.

If at all possible, I only pay with a large note (€50 or more) if I'm buying something that justifies it. Usually I don't even carry such things, but occasionally I have to return something and I'm given cash for it.

I never carry much more than $10 in cash anyway, and I only do that so I can use the vending machines at work.

He may have been watching you, but who knows who was watching him and taking note of how much cash he had ? Carrying a lot of cash around, much less flaunting it, is a horrible idea.

On the rate occasions I have either a 50 or 100 $ bill, I will ask if they can take it, usually at either the grocery store or other store that is more likely to have change to give. If they don't, I use another method of payment, until I can get to the bank to deposit the big bills. It's a simple concept, really....but some people just don't get it.

My PT job is in a clothing store, so we don't get many who pay with cash, and if they do, its a 100 to pay for 80-something dollars worth of stuff. Once in a while someone will buy something small, and I have to give them 1's and 5's..I always apologize, but hey, I can only give what I have.

you would be surprised how many times this has happened to me on a delivery. same situation, same wad of bills and all they can come up with $100 or $50 for a $13 order.

People get all huffy and snotty and upset that we can not break their large bill, even when we tell them beforehand (as in when they are placing the order over the phone). sorry I am not getting set up for a potential robbery.

Heck sometimes, on the last delivery on a triple run, I get a little short on bills and people get snotty with me giving them all $1 bills for $15 in change.
I'm lost without a paddle and headed up SH*T creek.

I don't think I have ever seen a $100 bill in real life. When I go to the US, i get the cash i need out of the ATM on arrival, and its inevitably in $20s.

Come to think of it, I rarely see £50 notes over here. These days, I'm lucky if i see a £20 note...!

I know that many businesses believe that when someone purchases for small amounts and pay with a big bill it is an attempt of counterfeit money.

I think this is a sound attitude, especially when you see that the client has small bills enough to pay for the merchandise.

That was exactly my thinking. There was an incident here pretty recently (a few days ago) in which two women/girls made the rounds at an upscale shopping center with almost a grand in funny money. All $100's, and the footage they released on the news showed smaller purchases.
